WAYNE, Neb. – Wayne State used a 9-0 run in overtime to build a seven-point lead and held on to earn a 74-69 overtime victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Friday in Wayne, Neb.

Scott Roehl scored with 10 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.
It was another crushing, close loss for the Mustangs, who are now 0-3 in overtime games this season and have lost another three games in regulation by a total of five points.
Wayne State earns its second straight victory and improves to 11-9 overall, 7-9 NSIC, while SMSU falls for the second straight game and is 9-11 overall, 6-10 NSIC. SMSU, which is 1-9 on the road this season, including losing nine straight, now falls into a tie for ninth place in the conference standings with Northern State.
Roehl led SMSU with 14 points and 15 rebounds for his team-leading 10th double-double of the season.
Vinard Birch added 13 points and four assists for SMSU, which committed 19 turnovers, tying for its second highest this season. WSC finished with 24 points off of the Mustang turnovers, while SMSU scored just eight points from eight WSC turnovers.
The Mustangs finished the game shooting 49 percent (27 of 55) from the field, but was 9 of 17 from the free throw line, but was just 6 of 13 from the line in the second half and overtime.
Jason Jensen led all scorers with 21 points to pace the Wildcats.
SMSU started the game strong connecting on seven of its first 11 shots from the field to take a 15-7 lead, following back-to-back field goals by
Nick Smith.
The Mustangs extended the lead to 22-14 with seven minutes and 37 seconds left in the half following a basket by
Lavione West, but SMSU failed to make a field goal for the next six minutes to allow WSC to tie the score at 25-25.
Scott Roehl ended the streak for SMSU with a basket at the 1:03 mark to give the Mustangs a 27-25 halftime lead.
SMSU shot 46 percent (11 of 24) in the opening half, but committed six turnovers, which led to seven WSC points. The Wildcats also recorded six second chance points in the first half, compared to just two for SMSU. WSC shot just 35 percent (10 of 29) in the half, including 3 of 11 from 3-point range.
Smith paced the Mustangs in the first half with seven points and four rebounds, while Roehl grabbed eight rebounds in the opening half.
In the second half, with the score tied at 29, SMSU put together an 8-1 run, capped by a pair of West field goals to give SMSU a 37-30 lead with 14 minutes left in the game.
WSC then rallied and took its first lead since 3-0, following a 3-pointer with 6:43 left to take a 45-44 lead. Birch quickly answered for SMSU with a 3-pointer of his own to give the lead back to the Mustangs at 47-45 at the 6:20 mark.
The Wildcats then answered with a 6-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 51-47 lead with 2:44 left in the game.
SMSU came back with back-to-back field goals by Roehl and
Trent Carlson to tie the game at 51 with just 1:46 remaining, until WSC scored four straight points to take a 55-51 lead with 26 seconds remaining.
Birch quickly rallied SMSU on its next possession completing a three-point play with 20 seconds on the clock to make it 55-54.
WSC then made one of two free throws with 18 seconds remaining to take a two-point lead, but Roehl answered for SMSU and tied the game with a field goal with 10 seconds left. WSC had a shot to win it at the buzzer but a last-second field goal fell short on the rim to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, SMSU took a 60-58 lead with 3:34 remaining on a Roehl field goal, but WSC came back with a 9-0 run to take a 67-60 lead with 48 seconds on the clock.
Carlson and Miller each drilled 3-pointers sandwich around a pair of WSC free throws to cut the lead to 69-66 with 33 seconds remaining. The field goal was the first of the night for Miller, SMSU's leading scorer.
SMSU trailed 70-66 with 30 seconds left and had the ball, but one final turnover cost SMSU and WSC sealed the game with free throws down the stretch.
Southwest Minnesota State will close out the weekend road trip tomorrow night taking on Augustana College with tip-off slated for 6 p.m. in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Vikings are ranked No. 4 in this week's NCAA Central Region rankings. SMSU defeated Augustana 66-64 earlier this season in Marshall.
