WINONA, Minn. – Jordan Kontz delivered a pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the 10th to lift Southwest Minnesota State to a 5-4 victory over Winona State in game two of a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday.
Winona State (5-5) won the opener 12-0 behind a four-hit shutout by Kodey Simon.
In the nightcap, Tyler Flattum led off the 10th with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt by Tyler Jendro, before Kontz came through with the game-winning single.
Jendro earned the victory in relief, tossing four innings, allowing just two hits and one earned run.
SMSU (4-6) trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth before mounting a three-run rally. Adam Thygesen cut the deficit to 3-2 with an RBI double, before Tyler Fayden singled to put runners on the corners. Brian Ness then smacked a two-run double down the left field line to give SMSU a 4-3 lead.
The Warriors used a lead-off walk, a sac bunt, a passed ball and sac fly to tie the game in the top of the seventh.
Aaron Johnson started on the mound for SMSU and pitched 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, with three walks and one strike out. Nate Dickhausen a solid 1.2 innings of shutout relief with one strikeout.
Fayden led SMSU with two hits and two runs scored.
In the opener, Simon struck out seven SMSU hitters to pace WSU, while the Warriors opened a 3-0 lead with a five-run fourth inning and never looked back.
Mark Hanson, Flattum, Ness and Kontz each finished with one hit in the opener.
The two teams will conclude the four-game series tomorrow starting at 12 p.m.
