Ness and Johnson Pace SMSU Baseball to Split on Saturday

SIOUX CITY, Iowa –
Aaron Johnson tosses seven strong innings, while Brian Ness belted a pair of home runs to lead Southwest Minnesota State to an 11-1 game two victory over the University of Mary on Saturday in Sioux City, Iowa.

UMary (5-11, 1-5 NSIC) won the opener 6-2. The doubleheader, originally scheduled to be played in Marshall, was moved to Sioux City due to field conditions in Marshall.

Johnson allowed just one run on six hits, while striking out five and walking one to improve to 1-0 on the season for SMSU (5-8, 1-1 NSIC).

Ness finished game two 4 for 5 with five RBI and two runs scored, belting a two-run homer and a three-run in his first two at bats. Adam Thygesen and Tyler Fayden both added three hits each, while Tyler Flattum collected a pair of hits.

Ness gave SMSU a 2-0 lead in the first inning hitting his first home run of the game and second of the season.

In the second inning, Tyler Jendro scored on a throwing error, before Thygesen ripped a run-scoring single to push the lead to 4-0. Following a hit-and-run single by Mark Hanson, Fayden followed with an RBI double to give SMSU a 5-0 lead. Ness then capped the inning with a three-run home over the right field wall to extend the lead to 8-0.

Thygesen added to the lead with an RBI single in the third to give SMSU a 9-0 cushion.

UMary added a single run in the sixth, but SMSU ended the game via the 10-run rule in the eighth inning as Jordan Kontz smacked a two-run single to left-center field.

In the opener, UMary's Matt Medeiros tossed a complete game seven-hitter, allowing just one earned run, while striking out four SMSU batters.

The Marauders scored a run in the first inning off of SMSU starter Alex Alvarez, before adding three more in the second and then added two more in the third as SMSU failed to complete a potential inning-ending double play to build a 6-0 lead.

SMSU cut the lead to 6-2 on a fielder's choice RBI by Ness and error by UMary.

The Mustangs hit into four double plays in the game and left eight runners on base, including the bases loaded in the second inning and two more in scoring position in the third inning.

Jendro finished game two with a pair of hits to lead a seven-hit SMSU attack.

Alvarez dropped to 2-2 on the season, allowing six runs, five earned on seven hits, while striking out two and walking three. Steven Wehr tossed the final 4.2 innings, allowing just two hits with two strikeouts.

The two teams will complete the four-game series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. at Sioux City North High School.
