SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Cody Curry smacked an RBI double in the bottom of the 10th to score
Chris Eichten from first base and lift Southwest Minnesota State to an 8-7 victory over the University of Mary in game one of a doubleheader in Sioux City, Iowa.
SMSU (7-8, 3-1 NSIC) completed the sweep with a 12-4 victory in game two and finished the weekend winning three of four games.
In the opener, SMSU jumped to an early 4-0 lead behind a pair of two-run home runs from
Tyler Fayden and
Tyler Flattum.
U-Mary (5-13, 1-7 NSIC) tied the game with three runs in the third and a single run in the fourth, before belted a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth to give SMSU a 5-4 advantage.
The Marauders answered in the fifth with three runs to build a 7-5 lead, before SMSU answered with clutch hitting and solid pitching to tie the game and earn the victory.
SMSU pushed across a pair of runs to tie the game in the sixth inning, scoring on a balk and an error, but was unable to score the go-ahead run.
The SMSU pitching staff then took over as Mustang relievers
Tyler Jendro and
Landon Gacke combined to retire 17 straight U-Mary hitters from the fifth inning to the 10th inning.
In the bottom of the 10th, Eichten reached on a one-out single, before Curry came off the bench and drilled the first pitch into the left-center field gap to give SMSU the victory.
Flattum finished the game 3 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Jendro and
Adam Thygesen each added two hits apiece.
Gacke earned his first career victory tossing a perfect 10th inning. Jendro tossed five innings, allowing just one hit, one unearned run, while walking two and striking out five.
Chris Koep started on the mound for SMSU and pitched 2.2 innings, giving up three runs and three hits, while walking four and striking out four.
In game two, SMSU trailed 2-0 in the third inning, before RBI singles by Thygesen and Fayden tied the game at 2-2 after three innings.
In the fourth, SMSU put the game away with a seven-run inning, sending 11 batters to the plate.
Tyler Brinka smashed a run-scoring double to give SMSU a 3-2 lead, while Thygesen followed up two batters later with a two-run single to extend the lead to 5-2. Fayden and Flattum added an RBI doubles, before Eichten closed the inning with a two-run single to make the score 9-2.
U-Mary trimmed the lead to 9-4 in the sixth, before SMSU closed its scoring in the bottom of the inning behind a solo homer from
Brian Ness and a two-run homer by Jendro.
Doug Mead finished the game 3 for 4 with two runs scored, Thygesen was 2 for 2 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Fayden and Ness each collected a pair of hits.
Dickhausen, making his second career start, earned the victory scattering 11 hits in 5.1 innings, allowing four runs with six strikeouts and one walk.
SMSU will continue conference play on Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader versus St. Cloud State. The pair of games was scheduled to be played in Marshall, but poor field conditions will force the game to be moved to another location. An official announcement will be made on Monday.
