GAME 2 BOX SCORE

MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State rallied from two runs down in the ninth inning to send the game to extra innings and eventually earn a 6-5 victory in 10 innings over Bemidji State in game two of a doubleheader in Marshall.

BSU pushed across three runs with two outs in the top of the seventh to earn a 3-0 victory in game one.

The victory in game two snapped an eight-game losing streak for SMSU, its longest since 2006, and improves its record to 10-22 overall, 6-15 NSIC. BSU is now 18-25 overall, 12-17 NSIC, following the split.

In the nightcap, SMSU trailed 2-1 in the seventh inning, before scoring a pair of runs to take a 3-2 lead into the eighth. The Beavers quickly responded and regained the lead following a two-out, three-run home run by Lewis Baumann.

Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth, SMSU's Jordon Kontz led off with a single through the left side. Following a fly out by Tyler Fayden for the first out, Brian Ness grounded out to first base for the second out, but the throw to second for a double play to end the game was just late. Tyler Flattum singled to center field to score Kontz and trim the lead to 5-4, before Tyler Brinka ripped the first pitch and kept the game alive with a single to center. Cody Curry then followed with a first-pitch single to center field to score Flattum and tie the game at 5.

In the 10th, SMSU relief pitcher Corby McGlauflin, who pitched a perfect ninth inning, stranded a pair of BSU runners at first and second base to keep the game tied.

In the home half of the inning, Adam Thygesen, with one out, worked the count full before earning a walk to put the winning run on first. Thygesen stole second base, before Kontz walked on four pitches. Fayden followed with single that tipped off the BSU right fielder's glove to load the bases for Ness. Moments later, BSU pitcher Ryan Anderson uncorked a wild pitch allowing Thygesen to score the winning run from third base.

BSU scored the game's runs, using a hit and three walks in the second inning to build a 2-0 lead and chase Mustang starter Ryan Helgeson.

SMSU left the bases loaded in the second and two more in the third, before finally breaking through in the fourth on an RBI ground out by Josh Wendland.

The Mustangs took the lead in the seventh inning as Thygesen singled and moved to second on a sac bunt. A Fayden single put runners on the corners, before Ness grounded out to first base to score Thygesen and tie the game at 2. Flattum then stepped to the plate and stroked a single to center field and give SMSU a short-lived one-run lead.

In the BSU eighth inning, with two outs and runners on the corners, Ben Bartling relieved Alex Alvarez and on the first pitch Baumann drilled the three-run home to give the Beavers the lead.

McGlauflin picked up the win with two innings of shutout relief and is now 1-0 on the season. Alvarez tossed a solid six innings of relief, allowing just two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and zero walks. Helgeson lasted just 1.1 innings in his first start of the season, giving up two runs on two hits, while walking three and striking out one.

SMSU collected 13 hits in the game with Fayden leading the way with three hits, his team-leading fifth three-hit game of the season, and also scored a run. Flattum, Brinka and Curry all picked up a pair of hits as well, while Thygesen scored two runs.

In game one, SMSU starting pitcher Nate Dickhausen and BSU starter Ryan Sander locked up in a pitcher's duel, keeping the game scoreless until the seventh inning. BSU snapped the scoreless game in the top of the seventh as Baumann, smacked a 1-2 pitch in the right-center field to score the game's first run, before another RBI hit and an error gave BSU a 3-0 lead.

SMSU nearly escaped the threat as moments before Baumann's hit, with runners on the corners, Dickhausen picked off the BSU runner at first base, but SMSU failed in the run-down attempt and the runner returned to first base.

The Mustangs left six runners on base, including two in the sixth and seventh innings.

Dickhause was the tough-luck loser for SMSU with 6.2 innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits.

Thygesen finished the game 2 for 3 to pace a seven-hit SMSU offense.

SMSU will close out the 2011 season this weekend with a four-game series at Wayne State College (22-16, 15-9 NSIC) in Wayne, Neb. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. The Wildcats have won 10 straight games following two victories on Tuesday.
