Wayne State Sweeps SMSU with a Pair of One-Run Victories

WAYNE, Neb. - 
Wayne State rallied with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Southwest Minnesota State 7-6 in game two of a doubleheader and complete a sweep on Saturday. WSC (24-16, 17-9 NSIC) scored an unearned run in the opener to earn a 1-0 win.

The two victories extends WSC's winning streak to 12 in a row. SMSU drops to 10-24, 6-17 NSIC.

WSC pushed across the final two runs with three hits and taking advantage of a pair of bases on balls.

SMSU trailed 3-0 after three innings, before scoring five unanswered runs. The Mustangs scored an unearned run in the fourth following a throwing error and then took the lead in the seventh with a four-run outburst. Chris Eichten cut the deficit to 3-2 with an infield RBI single, before Doug Mead and Jordon Kontz each laid down RBI sac bunts to give SMSU a 4-3 lead. Tyler Fayden capped the inning with a run-scoring double to extend the margin to 5-3.

WSC scored two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 5, before SMSU countered again in the eight to regain the lead.

With one out, Cody Curry was hit by and pitch and pinch runner Josh Wendland stole second to move into scoring position. Following a strikeout, Eichten gave SMSU the lead with a single down the right field line.

SMSU reliever Corby McGlauflin retired WSC in order in the bottom of the eighth to keep the lead at 6-5, but the Mustangs failed to extend the lead in the ninth leaving the bases loaded.

The Wildcats then used the momentum and put together the game-winning rally off of three SMSU pitchers.

SMSU collected 11 hits in the game with Fayden, Curry and Eichten each finishing with two hits.

Steven Wehr started on the mound for SMSU, but lasted just one-plus inning, allowing three runs on two hits and three walks. Derek Skovbroten came on in the second and tossed a solid 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on two hits. McGlauflin took the loss and drops to 1-1 on the season.

In game one, a pair of Wayne State pitchers held SMSU to just two hits and the Wildcats took advantage of an SMSU error to earn a 1-0 victory.

Aaron Johnson was the tough luck losing pitcher for SMSU, allowing an unearned run in the second inning. Johnson finished allowing four hits and four walks with one strikeout.

Tyler Flattum and Tyler Fayden picked up SMSU's only hits of the game.

SMSU's best chance to take the lead was in the sixth as Jordan Kontz was hit by a pitch with one out. Fayden followed with a single, while an error by the WSC shortstop loaded the bases. Tyler Brink stepped to the plate but hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the scoring threat.

The two teams will conclude the series on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. It will be the final two games of the season for SMSU.
