BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. – The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) recently announced that Southwest Minnesota State University head volleyball coach
Terry Culhane has been named one of the top five head girls' basketball coaches in Minnesota state history.
This winter, the MSHSL is celebrating 100 years of state basketball tournaments and each week the organization is listing the top coaches, top teams, best shots, best games and best finishes in state tournament history. The lists have been compiled with the assistance of a committee of basketball historians and experts from around the state of Minnesota.
Culhane, a Hall of Fame coach in basketball as well as volleyball, compiled a basketball coaching record of 425-85 with four state championships. He began his basketball-coaching career at Milroy High School in 1979 and led the team to a runner-up finish at the 1985 state tournament. In 1990, he took over Tracy-Milroy High School and helped lead the Panthers to a pair of state championships (1992 & 1996) and one third-place finish. Culhane then took over at Marshall High School in 1997 and led the Tigers to three state tournament appearances, including a pair of state titles (2001 & 2002).
Culhane, a Marshall native, became the head volleyball coach at SMSU in 2004 and has led the Mustangs to the NCAA tournament every season, including reaching the region championship match this past season. In eight seasons as SMSU head coach, Culhane has a record of 206-60.
