OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton Bluejays scored 27 points off 21 SMSU turnovers in a 90-60 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in an exhibition game on Wednesday night at the D.J. Sokol Arena. The Bluejays had three players with double-digit score totals, including Sarah Nelson, who recorded a game-high 21 points.
SMSU had three players hit double-digit scoring as the Mustangs were led by freshman point guard
Annessa Rosch's 15 points.
Bree Holleman added 10 points on 4 of 11 shooting, while
Hope Bonlander had 10 points on 5 of 7 shooting. The Mustangs shot 45% from the floor in the game, 28.6% from behind the ark.
Val Sahr led the Mustangs by grabbing seven boards. SMSU was out-rebounded 41-27 in the contest with 17 of Creighton's 41 rebounds coming on the offensive end.
Creighton jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the first half and never looked back as the Bluejays never trailed in the game. The Bluejays shot 57% from the field and had nine offensive rebounds in the first half to take a 48-24 lead into the half.
Hope Bonlander recorded eight points in the first half to lead SMSU.
The Mustangs cut the Bluejay lead to 18 points early in the second half as
Bree Holleman and
Rebekah Rolling connected on 3-pointers with SMSU's first two possessions of the second-half. Creighton responded with a 12-4 run to pull away from SMSU and extend its lead to a 26 point margin. Creighton added eight more offensive rebounds in the second half to push its mark to 17 for the game.
Creighton pounded SMSU in the paint as the Bluejays recorded 44 points in the paint compared to SMSU's 22. The Bluejay post players combined for 54 points in the game.
Rebekah Rolling,
Megan DeRuyter and
Annessa Rosch saw their first action in a Mustang uniform as Rolling finished with five points in 22 minutes, DeRuyter with two points in 13 minutes and Rosch, who led SMSU in scoring, finished with 15 points in 23 minutes.
SMSU play its final exhibition as the Mustangs will take on Bethel University at the R/A Facility on Monday, Nov. 5 at 6:15 p.m.
