ANAHEIM, Calif. - Jordan Miller scored a game-high 17 points, while
Nick Smith added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 77-58 victory over North Carolina-Pembroke at day two of the Disney Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim, Calif.
SMSU (1-1) finished the game shooting 51 percent (28 of 55) from the field, including 56 percent (14 of 25) in the second half. The Mustangs shot just 35 percent in its season opening loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday afternoon.
Lavione West and
Matt Zager each added 10 points to aid the SMSU offense, while
Shaun Condon chipped in with eight points, three steals and three assists. Also adding to the balanced SMSU attack was
William Giddings with nine points and
Vinard Birch with eight points and six assists.
The game started slow for SMSU, as UNCP held the Mustangs scoreless for the game's first four minutes and held SMSU without a field goal for the game's first six and a half minutes. UNCP built its largest lead of the half at 14-3 with 11 minutes and 30 seconds remaining, before SMSU slowing cut into the lead.
SMSU tied the game at 16 with 7:11 remaining following a field goal by Zager, before UNCP answered back and pushed the lead to 30-25 with just over three minutes left in the half. From that point on it was all SMSU, as the Mustangs reeled off 14 straight points to close the half and build a 39-30 halftime lead. West gave SMSU its first lead of the game at 33-30 with 1:48 remaining with a three-point play and SMSU never looked back.
The Mustangs took an early 13-point lead to start the second half, before the Braves rallied on two occasions to trim the deficit to five points, including 45-40 with 16:40 left in the game. But that was as close as UNCP would come, as SMSU answered with a 13-2 run over the next two and a half minutes and cruised to its first win of the season.
Quamain Rose paced the Braves with 12 points and five rebounds.
SMSU returns to action on Saturday with a 1:15 p.m. CST tip-off versus Grand Canyon University (Ariz.).
