Mustangs shut down by Nebraska-Omaha, 63-37

Alison Nagel netted a career-high 19 points but the Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball team was shut down by the NCAA Division I Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks on Sunday afternoon to a score of 63-37.

SMSU finished the game with season-lows of 22 percent shooting from the floor and just 12 field goals. The Mavericks out-rebounded the Mustangs 51-33, including 20-8 on the offensive glass.

Alison Nagel had a game-high 19 points, with 17 coming in the second half to lead the Mustangs in scoring, while Bree Holleman followed with 10 points. Hannah Beeler had four points and Annessa Rosch and Val Sahr rounded out the scoring for the Mustangs with two points, respectively. Bree Holleman snagged seven boards to lead SMSU in rebounding.

The Mavericks (4-1) had just one athlete reach double-digits as Cathleen Cox had a team-high 10 points, but UNO had seven other athletes score six or more points to balance the offensive attack. Carolyn Blair-Mobley had a game-high 10 rebounds.

In the first half, SMSU shot a season-low 16 percent and made just four buckets (4-25) in the first half, with two coming from beyond the arc. SMSU was out-rebounded in the first half by a 30-18 margin, including 12-3 on the offensive glass.

SMSU would start the game with a six minute scoring drought but cut the Maverick lead to 8-3 with a Bree Holleman 3-pointer. SMSU wouldn't score a two-point bucket until the 4:34 mark in the first half as Val Sahr connected from the elbow. SMSU would cut the UNO lead to 24-10 with 16 seconds left but the Mavericks took the ball all the way down the court and Carly Cator connected on a mid-range jumper to push the lead to 26-10, heading into the half.

After not attempting a free throw in the first half, SMSU's first scoring opportunities of the second half came on two trips to the line by Bree Holleman and Hannah Beeler. The Mustangs would connect on three of four to cut the Maverick lead to 28-13.

UNO would respond with 12 consecutive points capped by a Carolyn Mobley-Blair 3-point bucket to pull out to a 38-15 lead. The Mavericks would never look back as they held the Mustangs to a season-low 12 field goals and 37 points to take the wire-to-wire victory, 63-37.

The Mustangs forced 16 Maverick turnovers in the game but surrendered 20 of their own.

SMSU (1-4) will return home to open up Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play as the Mustangs will welcome NSIC newcomers, Sioux Falls, to the R/A Facility at 5 p.m.
