THIS WEEK - Southwest Minnesota State opens its 46th season of men's basketball this weekend with three games at the Disney Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim, Calif. SMSU will face Cal. State Dominguez Hills at 3:30 p.m. CST on Friday, Nov. 9, followed by North Carolina-Pembroke at 8:15 p.m. CST on Saturday, Nov. 10, and Grand Canyon (Ariz.) at 1:15 p.m. CST?on Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Anaheim Convention Center.
SEASON OPENERS - Southwest Minnesota State is 26-19 all-time in season openers, which includes winning five of the last six and 13 of its past 16 season lid-lifters. SMSU lost at NCAA?Division I Wisconsin-Milwaukee in last season's opener. Since 1996, SMSU has lost just twice against non-NCAA?Division I?teams in the season opener, losing to Western Washington in 2002 and North Dakota in 2005.
HISTORY AT THE DISNEY - This will be the second time in four years that SMSU has competed at the Disney Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim and third time playing in a Disney Classic. SMSU finished 1-2 at the 2000 Disney Tip-Off Classic in Orlando, Fla., defeating St. Joseph's (Ind.) in the opening round, before losing to Rollins (Fla.) in the semifinals and Bentley (Mass.) in the third-place game. In 2008, SMSU won the three-day round-robin with a perfect 3-0 record, defeating Alaska-Anchorage, Humboldt State (Calif.) and Fort Lewis (Colo.).
