Mustang women's basketball wraps-up calendar year with two home contests

The Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball team will conclude the 2012 calendar year seeking its first NSIC victory with two home contests versus Minnesota State, Mankato this Friday, Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. and Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 5 p.m.

LAST WEEKEND RECAP
No. 7 Augustana remained undefeated, using a big first half run, to earn a 79-44 victory over SMSU on Friday night. SMSU shot just 29 percent (19 of 65) from the field, including 1 of 15 from 3-point range. Alison Nagel led the Mustangs with 16 points and six rebounds. Ellen Degler and Mikayla Saathoff each chipped in with six points apiece for SMSU with Saathoff grabbing a career-high six rebounds. The teams played a tight opening 11 minutes with Augie holding a 17-16 lead with nine minutes remaining following a layup by SMSU's Bree Hollemann. SMSU has now lost seven straight to Augustana in Sioux Falls, with SMSU's last victory coming during the 2001-02 season.

On Saturday, SMSU traveled to take on No. 15 Wayne State and took the Wildcats to the wire but fell, 66-61. With the loss, SMSU drops to 1-7 overall, 0-3 in the NSIC, while the Wildcats improved to 6-1 overall, 2-1 in the NSIC. The comeback victory extended Wayne State's consecutive home-game winning streak at Rice Auditorium to 51 games. SMSU was led by Ellen Degler who finished the game with a career-high 21 points. SMSU would lead 61-59 with 3:08 remaining in the game as Hope Bonlander worked her way inside for a two-point bucket. The bucket would be SMSU's final point of the game as the Mustangs went cold and allowed the Wildcats to score the final seven points of the game and complete the comeback, 66-61.
