Five Mustangs score in double figures in home victory over Wayne State

MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State used a balanced scoring attack, with five players scoring in double figures, as the Mustangs earned a 73-58 victory over Wayne State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball on Friday night.

SMSU (11-9, 10-6 NSIC) shot a season-high 59.2 percent from the field and finished making 7 of 12 3-point field goal attempts.

Nick Smith led the Mustangs with a game-high 14 points on 7 of 11 shooting, while Jordan Miller (13), William Giddings (13), Vinard Birch (11) and Casey Sussenguth (11) rounded out the double-digit scoring.  Miller scored all of his points in the second half and finished connecting on three 3-pointers.

SMSU, which committed 19 turnovers in the game, shot 68 percent (17 of 25) in the second half and held a 33-23 rebound advantage.  Sussenguth led SMSU with six rebounds, while Giddings and Tramel Barnes each grabbed five rebound apiece.

SMSU started the game strong, jumping out to an early lead, holding WSC scoreless for the first five minutes and 45 seconds.  SMSU held a 12-4 advantage with 11:47 left in the half following a 3-point play by Birch.

The Wildcats slowed chipped into the lead and eventually took its first lead of the game at 21-19 with 4:33 remaining on a layup by Adol Aluong.

Aluong connected on a 3-pointer with 2:13 left to tie the game at 25-all, before SMSU closed the half on a 7-2 run, highlighted by a 3-point field goal and dunk by Giddings.

Giddings led SMSU with 11 first half points on 4 of 4 shooting, including three 3-pointers.  SMSU finished the opening half shooting 50 percent from the field (12 of 24), but committed nine turnovers.  WSC shot 40.7 percent (11 of 27) from the field with Amry Shelby scoring nine points to pace the Wildcats.

SMSU took its first double-digit lead with 16:42 left in the game at 43-33 following a dunk by Giddings, before WSC answered with three straight points to trim the deficit to 43-36.

The Mustangs then put the game away putting together an 11-2 run to extend the lead to 54-38 at the 12:11 mark and never looked back in earning its 13th straight victory over WSC in Marshall.

Shelby paced the Wildcats with 13 points on 5 of 11 shooting, but was just 1 of 6 from 3-point range.  Derrell Williams added 12 points and a game-high six rebounds for WSC.

Southwest Minnesota State will continue action tomorrow night hosting Augustana College for the annual “Hawaiian Night” game starting at 8 p.m.
