GOLDEN, Colo. – No. 5 seed Minnesota State Moorhead connected on 11 3-pointers to earn an 82-66 victory over No. 4 seed Southwest Minnesota State at the NCAA II Central Region Tournament in Golden, Colo.
The Dragons also made 25 of 34 free throw attempts, including 23 of 32 in the second half, reaching the bonus with 14:32 left in the game.
Charlie Chapman paced MSUM with 24 points and 10 rebounds, connecting on 4 of 8 from 3-point range, while Andrew VanHavermaet finished with 19 points and five 3-pointers.
MSUM (21-9) moves into the tournament semifinals and will face top-seeded and No. 1 ranked Colorado School of Mines tomorrow night at 8:30 p.m. CDT. SMSU, which entered the game winners of 10 of its last 12, including two one-point losses, finishes the season at 19-11.
SMSU, which had shot over 48 percent from the field in 10 straight games and 50 percent or better in nine of its last 12, shot just 39 percent (25 of 64) from the field, its lowest since Jan. 14 versus Northern State and second lowest percentage of the season.
Lavione West led SMSU with 12 points and six rebounds, while
Jordan Miller chipped in with 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
William Giddings rounded out SMSU's double figure scoring with 10 points.
SMSU started the game slow as MSUM scored the game's first six points until
Tramel Barnes ended the streak with a jumper with 16 minutes and 19 seconds left in the half. The basket started a 9-0 run by the Mustangs capped with a
Trent Carlson 3-pointer at 14:05.
The teams traded the lead over the next few minutes, with SMSU holding its last lead at 16-15 following a 3-pointer by
William Giddings at the 10:12 mark.
MSUM responded with a 15-2 run to build a 30-18 advantage at the 3:20 mark, before taking a 36-25 halftime advantage.
SMSU shot just 34.5 percent (10 of 29) in the half with three 3-pointers and committed seven turnovers, while MSUM shot 50 percent (14 of 28) and connected on six 3-pointers.
VanHavermaet scored 17 first half points with five 3-pointers to pace the Dragons. SMSU was led by Miller's six points and five rebounds.
SMSU started the second half strong and trimmed the lead to 39-34, limiting MSUM to just 1 of 7 to start the half, but the Dragons came right back with six straight points to build the lead to 45-34 at 15:38. MSUM would continue to pour it on and built the lead to 59-39 with 13:40 left in the half.
SMSU cut the deficit to 63-50 following a layup by Giddings with 9:54 remaining, but MSUM came back again with a 10-2 run and put the game out of reach.
MSUM held a 39-34 rebound advantage.
