TUCSON, Ariz. – Southwest Minnesota State dropped its first two games at the Tucson Invitational on Sunday night, as Concordia-St. Paul earned a non-conference sweep with defeating SMSU 4-2 and 17-10.
In game one, SMSU (2-2) was held to just four hits and was held scoreless until scoring a pair of unearned runs in the seventh inning.
Tyler Flattum led the Mustangs with two of team's four hits hits.
Aaron Johnson started and pitched three innings, allowing seven hits, four runs, two earned runs, with three strikeouts and one walk.
The Golden Bears (2-2) took advantage of a two-out SMSU error in the bottom of the first inning to build an early 3-0 lead and then added another run in the third for a 4-0 cushion.
SMSU finally pushed across a pair of runs in the seventh on an RBI ground out by
Ben Korger and a throwing error by CU.
In game two, SMSU jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead, but the Golden Bears rallied with eight runs in the second and three more in the third and cruised to the sweep.
The Mustangs collected 11 hits in the loss, with
Brian Ness finishing 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Bryce Rippentrop suffered the loss allowing eight runs and six hits in 1.1 innings.
Concordia finished the nightcap with 20 hits off of four SMSU pitchers.
Southwest Minnesota State returns to action on Monday with single nine-inning game versus Southern Vermont starting at 11 a.m. CST. SMSU will conclude the day with a nine-inning game versus William Penn (Iowa) with first pitched set for 3 p.m. CST.
