Mustang struggles continue with sweep at Bemidji State

BEMIDJI, Minn. –
 Bemidji State gave a crushing blow to Southwest Minnesota State's NSIC tournament aspirations on Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep on, winning 8-1 and 15-8.

BSU's Logan Kalis, finished the doubleheader 7-for-9 with four home runs, 10 RBIs and seven runs scored and also pitched a complete game in the nightcap.

SMSU has lost seven straight and 10 of its last 11 games, falling to 22-23 overall, 12-18 NSIC, and into 10th place in the standings.  The Mustangs conclude the regular season hosting Minnesota, Crookston for four-games this weekend and must win all four games and receive help to qualify for the six-team tournament.

In game one, BSU opened the game's scoring with a two-run home run by Kalis in the bottom of the first inning and  then extended the lead to 4-0 with a two-run blast by Jaryd Marks in the third inning.

SMSU put together a rally in the fourth with Adam Thygesen leading off with a double and moving to third on a one-out single by Tyler FlattumBen Korger walked to load the bases, but a pop out and strikeout ended the inning.

Kalis hit his second homer of the game in the fifth to push the lead to 6-0, before BSU added two more runs in the sixth.

Trailing 8-0 in the seventh, SMSU scored its lone run on an RBI single by Chris Eichten.

Thygesen led the SMSU offense with two hits.

Bryce Rippentrop (3-4) started and tossed 4.2 innings, allowing six runs on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks.  Derek Skovbroten pitched the final 1.1 innings and gave up two runs on three hits.

Marks tossed a complete for BSU, allowing an unearned run on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

In game two, SMSU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Brian Ness.

BSU answered back in the bottom of the inning with Kalis drilling a two-run homer off of SMSU starter Steven Wehr to give the Beavers a 2-1 advantage.

The Mustangs countered with a big second inning to regain the lead, pushing across three runs on four hits all with two outs.  Ben Korger started the rally with a bunt single and was followed by a single by Ryan Engels.  Eichten tied the game with a run-scoring base hit, before Jon Ellis walked to load the bases.  Thygesen then gave SMSU the lead with an RBI single, before Eichten scored on a wild pitch to give SMSU a 4-2 lead.

The lead wouldn't last long as BSU answered with five runs on six hits in the bottom of the second to build a 7-4 advantage.

Ben Korger cut the BSU lead to 7-5 with an RBI triple in the third, but the Beavers put the game away with another five-run inning to extend the marking to 12-5 and never looked back.

Jordon Kontz led a 13-hit SMSU attack in game two going 3 for 4, while Korger, Ness and Thygesen all collected two hits apiece.  Eichten's hit in the second inning extended his team-high hitting streak to 13 games.

Nate Dickhausen (2-2) picked up the loss in relief, allowing six runs on seven hits in 1.1 innings. 

SMSU's doubleheader on Saturday is set to begin at 12 p.m.
