SMSU travels south to face the University of Sioux Falls in a mid-week showdown

THIS WEEK - Southwest Minnesota State University (8-8, 5-4 NSIC) continues Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Tuesday, Jan. 15, with a showdown at the University of Sioux Falls (6-7, 2-7 NSIC) with tip-off slated for 8 p.m. at the Stewart Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.  The two teams are meeting for the second time this season with SMSU earning a 70-60 victory in the NSIC opener on Dec. 1 in Marshall.  Following Tuesday night's game, SMSU continues play on the road on Friday, Jan. 18, taking on Northern State University and then concludes the weekend with a road game versus MSU Moorhead on Saturday, Jan. 19.

LAST TIME OUT - Southwest Minnesota State split two home games last weekend, losing 71-69 to St. Cloud State, before rebounding with a 76-64 victory over Minnesota Duluth.  SMSU is 0-5 when playing on Friday's, but 7-0 when playing on Saturday's.  In the loss to SCSU, SMSU led for the game's first 34 minutes, before SCSU rallied for the victory.  SMSU's Nick Smith, who recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds, appeared to tie the game with eight seconds left in regulation, but the basket was called off due to offensive goaltending.  Smith finished the game making 9 of 11 field goal attempts.  Vinard Birch and Jordan Miller each added 13 points, while Matt Zager chipped in 12 points.  In the victory over UMD, Miller scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to pace the Mustangs.  SMSU shot 61 percent from the field and made 11 of 12 free throws.
