BOX SCORE
MANKATO, Minn. - A Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game that featured its top two teams and two National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) top 25 teams ended in a 0-0 stalemate as No. 25 Southwest Minnesota State and No. 2 Minnesota State each earned a point for the double overtime tie. MSU came into the weekend with the NCAA's ninth highest scoring offense.
It was the first time that Minnesota State hadn't recorded a score since Sept. 15 when the Mavericks were shutout by No. 2 Grand Valley State, 2-0.
Having defeated Sioux Falls 7-0 a day prior, the MSU Mavericks came into the game versus SMSU firing on all cylinders and carried with them a 32-game NSIC and home unbeaten streak. The Mavericks extended both streaks to 33 by forcing a 0-0 tie with SMSU.
SMSU goalkeeper
Brienna Dehkes recorded a career-high 12 saves in the shutout en route to her her second consecutive shutout and eighth on the season. Dehkes is now 13-1-1 in net for the Mustangs this season with a 0.58 goal allowed average and 71 saves.
SMSU wasn't without scoring opportunities in the tie as arguably the best opportunity came in the first overtime when
Vanesa Corona had a free-kick from the 18-yard line. MSU goalkeeper Lauren Hoeppner would come up with a game-saving stop to keep the Mustangs at bay. Corona's shot was one of SMSU's 13 shots on the day. MSU, the NSIC's highest scoring offense, managed 25 shots against the Mustangs but none beat Dehkes.
The second overtime saw MSU fire off seven shots, while SMSU didn't record a shot.
Each team earns a point in the conference standings with the tie as Minnesota State now owns 37 points and SMSU has 34 points.
SMSU (14-1-1, 11-1-1) will return to The Schwan Regional Event Center in Marshall for the final regular season home game this Thursday for an afternoon showdown with Wayne State. SMSU lost 2-0 last season to the Wildcats to end the 2012 campaign on a 4-game losing streak.
