Winona State shoots 61.8 percent in 81-59 win over SMSU

WINONA, Minn. -
Winona State shot 61.8 percent from the field in the Warriors' 81-59 win over Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball action. The 81 points scored by WSU is the second most points given up by SMSU in series history and most since the 1986-87 season. WSU has now taken 13 of the last 14 games in the series.

SMSU falls to 2-7 overall, 0-5 in the NSIC, while the Warriors improve to 6-3 overall, 2-3 in the NSIC.

WSU finished the game shooting 34 of 55, including 8 of 14 from 3-point range. The 34 field goals made by WSU is the most given up by SMSU this season. Kelsey Andrist finished 7 of 8 with 16 points to lead the Warriors, while SMSU was led by Bree Holleman's 7 of 10 shooting and 16 points. She finished 2 of 4 from 3-point range to tie Tori Fink's mark for fifth most in school history with 121.

For the second straight game, SMSU allowed an opponent to shoot better than 60 percent from the floor in the first half - Winona State finished 17 of 27 from the floor, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range. SMSU turned the ball over nine times alone in the first half and the Warriors turned them into 10 points. SMSU led 6-3 early on, but WSU went on a 16-4 to pull away. The Warriors maintained a double-digit lead throughout the half and took a 43-35 lead into the locker room.

WSU didn't slow in the second half as the Warriors went 17 of 28 from the floor (60.7 percent). It was the first time an opponent shot 60+ percent from the floor in a game versus SMSU since Nov. 9, 2012 versus No. 3 Pittsburg State.

Alison Nagel, who scored 17+ points in each of the last five straight games, finished with 11 points on 4 of 5 shooting. Nagel has reached double-digit scoring in all nine games this season.

SMSU will return home to R/A Facility to put the calendar year in the books with a conference game versus Sioux Falls on Saturday.
