MARSHALL, Minn. – Cameron McCaffrey, the conference's leading scorer, scored a game-high 28 points, while Casey Schilling scored a career-high 17 points, to lead Augustana to a 92-82 victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday night in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball.
The win for the Vikings (18-6, 14-6 NSIC) snapped a season-high four-game winning streak for SMSU (15-12, 12-8 NSIC).
Augustana finished the game shooting 59.6 percent (31 of 52) from the field and connected on 10 of 18 3-point field goals. It was just the second time an opponent has shot more than 50 percent from the field this season versus SMSU and the most points allowed by SMSU this season.
Lavione West paced SMSU with a career-high 23 points on 10 of 13 shooting, while
Matt Zager scored 21 points.
Jordan Miller added 17 points and six assists to help the SMSU charge.
SMSU ended the game shooting 51 percent (29 of 57) from the field, including 7 of 19 from 3-point range. Augustana held a 31-27 rebound advantage
SMSU started the game strong jumping out to an 11-4 lead in the first three minutes. The Mustangs pushed the lead to 20-11 – its largest lead of the half - with 12 minutes left in the half, before the Vikings reeled off eight straight points to pull within 20-19 at the 10:26 mark.
Augustana took its first lead of the game at 23-22 on a Casey Schilling field goal with 8:10 remaining, before
Matt Zager gave SMSU the lead back seconds later with a 3-pointer.
The Vikings opened a 36-36 tie with three minutes left in the half, putting together a 7-2 run to take its largest lead of the half at 43-38 with 57 seconds remaining, before settling for a 43-41 halftime lead.
The teams played a tight back-and-forth game for much of the second half with SMSU holding its last lead of the game at 57-56 with 12:47 remaining following a free throw by Zager.
With the score tied at 58-58 with 10:45 left in the game, the Vikings used a short 4-0 run to take the lead and never gave up the advantage in earning their first win in Marshall over SMSU since the 2005-06 season.
Zager hit a layup with 6:34 left to cut the Augustana lead to 71-68, but scored five straight points to build a 76-68 lead at the 6:34 mark. SMSU cut the deficit to four points on two occasions – including 80-76 with 3:33 left following a Miller field goal – but the Vikings had an answer with Jamall Taylor hitting a jumper, then forcing an SMSU turnover, before Schilling extended the lead to 84-76 with a field goal with 2:06 remaining to seal the win.
