Bemidji State holds off SMSU rally to earn 8-5 victory

TUCSON, Ariz. – Bemidji State jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and then held off a late Southwest Minnesota State comeback to earn an 8-5 victory in non-conference baseball on Thursday in Tucson, Ariz.

BSU (6-7), which collected 15 hits in the game, was led by Trevor Purvis, who finished with three hits and three RBIs.

SMSU (4-9-1) was led by freshman Sam Haas, who recorded his first career three-hit game, with a home run, double, two runs scored and two RBIs.  Kyle Young added two hits for the Mustangs, which finished with 10 hits.

Mustang starting pitcher Travis McGlauflin (1-3) dropped his third straight decision, allowing seven runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and two walks.  SMSU relief pitches Landon Gacke and Dylan Shoemaker combined to toss the final four innings, allowed just one run with three strikeouts.

BSU scored three runs on five hits in the first two innings to build a 3-0 lead, then added to the margin with a four-run fourth inning, taking advantage of one SMSU error and a fly ball lost in the sun to stretch the lead to 7-0.

SMSU cut into the deficit in the fifth, pushing across three runs on three hits.  Jon Ellis started the inning with a single and was followed by single by Steven Kremer.  Haas then drilled a run-scoring double to score Ellis, while Kremer scored on the play on a throwing error.  Haas later came around to score on a ground out by Ben Korger.

SMSU made the score 7-4 in the sixth on back-to-back doubles by Brian Ness and Young, before Haas cut the deficit to 7-5 in the seventh with a lead-off home run, the first of his career.

The Beavers added an insurance run in the eighth, while pitcher Logan Kalis ended the SMSU comeback tossing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts to earn the save.

Southwest Minnesota State concludes its eight-game Arizona trip tomorrow with a nine-inning game versus Dordt College (Iowa) starting at 11 a.m. CDT.
