SMSU closes out Metrodome action with twinbill on Tuesday versus Mayville State

THIS WEEK - The Southwest Minnesota State University baseball team (3-2) continues non-conference action on Tuesday with a doubleheader versus Mayville State University (N.D.) (4-0) at the Metrodome in Minneapolis starting at 11:45 a.m.  The two teams will play a pair of 7-inning games.  Following Tuesday's  games, SMSU will return to action on Saturday, March 9, beginning a eight-game road trip in Tucson, Ariz.   

Mayville State is 4-0 on the season, sweeping doubleheaders over Concordia (Moorhead) and Minnesota, Crookston.

SERIES HISTORY - Southwest Minnesota State and Mayville State meet for the first time ever on Tuesday morning. 

LEAD OFF NOTES -
•Game two of SMSU's doubleheader versus Concordia-St. Paul on Feb. 27, was halted in the top of the sixth inning due to the time-limit rule at the Metrodome.  CU led 3-1 with SMSU coming to bat.  The two teams will try and resume the game at a later time this season.
•Sophomore Jon Ellis' walk-off hit was SMSU's first since Tyler Flattum's walk-off double beat Upper Iowa on April 18, 2011.
•Senior Kyle Young leads the team with seven hits and is tied for the team-lead with five runs scored.
•Young has reached base in all five games this season.
•Young leads the team with three multi-hit games this season.
•Senior right-hander Alex Alvarez has missed the first five games of the season win an injury.
•Freshman Travis McGlauflin earned his first career victory tossing four-plus innings, allowing one hit in a 7-3 victory over the University of Mary on Feb. 17.

HEAD COACH - Paul Blanchard, the all-time leader in victories at SMSU, is in his 17th season as head coach in 2013 and has an overall record of 415-313-1, including 223-143 in conference play.  During his tenure, Blanchard has led the program to its only NCAA tournament appearance, one Northern Sun Conference Intercollegiate championship, three NSIC tournament championships and 14 appearances in the NSIC tournament.  Blanchard's 412 career victories entering the season ranked 47th among all active coaches in NCAA Division II.  Named the fifth coach in SMSU history on July 14, 1996, Blanchard has coached two NSIC Players of the Year, one NSIC Pitcher of the Year, 21 all-region players, two Academic All-Americans, the program's only NCAA All-American and two Major League Baseball draft picks.
