MINNEAPOLIS - Mayville State's seven-run first inning broke open game one of a doubleheader as the Comets remained undefeated and sailed to a 10-2 victory over Southwest Minnesota State at the Metrodome. Game two was called due to the exipration of the time-limit with the game tied at 3. The game offcially ends as a tie.
In game one, SMSU (3-3-1) got off to a rocky start that it would not be able to recover from, giving up seven runs on six hits and committing an error. Starter
Travis McGlauflin (1-1) was issued the loss and couldn't get out of the first inning before being relieved by
Brandan Alfson.
The bats were quiet as the Mustangs scored just two runs on seven hits and struck seven times.
Mayville State (5-0) stayed perfect on the season by getting a solid outing from starting pitcher Victor Sokolosky (3-0), who picked up the win by pitching four innings, striking out six, while only allowing one earned run.
Jordan Kontz and
Ryan Engels each collected two hits for the Mustangs in the loss, while
Jarred Carlson picked up both of SMSU's RBIs.
In game two, the game was declared a tie after seven innings and as the time-limit for the Metrodome had expired. SMSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a three-run third inning. Nick Tillo gave SMSU a 1-0 lead with a sac fly, before
Steven Kremer made it 2-0 with an RBI single.
Josh Hanson added to the lead with an RBI double, but SMSU failed to add to the lead leaving the bases loaded.
MSU added a run in the fourth, before SMSU looked to add to the lead in the bottom of the inning, loaded the bases with one out, but a double play ended the threat keeping the score 3-1
The game remained a two-run game into the sixth, but the lead was erased as the Comets tied it with a two-run, two-run double following an SMSU two-out error.
Colton Smit pitched a career-high 5.1 innings without allowing an earned run and striking out three.
Josh Hanson led SMSU with two hits and recorded an RBI.
SMSU will resume action in Tucson, Ariz., with eight games starting on Saturday versus Arizona Christian.
