SMSU baseball resumes NSIC play on Thursday in Sioux Falls

THIS WEEK - The Southwest Minnesota State University baseball team (6-12-1, 1-3 NSIC) will play six Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games this week, despite poor field conditions that continue to cause havoc in the upper Midwest.  SMSU will play Winona State (8-8, 2-0 NSIC) on Thursday with the doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.  The twin bill was originally scheduled for Wednesday in Winona, meaning WSU will be the home team for Thursday's doubleheader.  On Saturday and Sunday, SMSU will take on Minnesota Duluth (2-16, 2-2 NSIC) at a site to be deterimed.  The four-game set was originally scheduled for Alumni Field in Marshall.  An official announcement will be made later this week.

SERIES HISTORY - Winona State leads Southwest Minnesota State 107-53 in a series that started in  1970.  The two teams did not play each other last season.  The teams last played in 2011, splitting a non-conference doubleheader in Winona in mid-March.  WSU leads 9-8 in the last 17 games played since 2007.    SMSU head coach Paul Blanchard is 31-31 all-time versus WSU ... UMD leads SMSU 54-53 in the all-time series dating back to 1977 ... SMSU won three of four game last season ... SMSU has won 13 of the last 17 games ... SMSU head coach Paul Blanchard is 23-14 all-time versus UMD.

MUSTANG TRENDS - Senior Kyle Young leads the team with a .410 batting average and has collected a team-high 10 multi-hit games ... Young also has a team-leading 10 bases on balls ... Junior Jarred Carlson has a team-high 15 RBIs and also leads the club with six multi-RBI games ... Senior Brian Ness tied a career-high with four hits at Augustana on March 30 ... Sophomore Ryan Engels belted his first career home run in SMSU's 8-6 over Augustana on March 30 ... Junior Ryan Ecalbarger and sophomore Eric Giddings lead the team with eight pitching appearances ... Junior Steven Wehr has the lowest ERA (3.66) among starting pitchers ... SMSU has been outscored 22-6 in the first inning and a combined 39-15 in the first two innings ... SMSU is just 3 for 14 (.214) with the bases loaded, while opponents are 10 for 28 (.357) ... SMSU is 4-0 when leading after five innings, 5-0 when leading after six innings and 3-0 when leading after seven and eight.
