Ness and McGlauflin pace SMSU to split with Bemidji State

GAME 1 BOX | GAME 2 BOX

BEMIDJI, Minn. –
Freshman Travis McGlauflin tossed his first career nine-inning complete game, while Brian Ness collected three hits and three RBIs, to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 6-1 victory over Bemidji State in game two of a doubleheader in Bemidji.  BSU racked up 15 hits and cruised to a 10-3 victory in game one.

The split today leaves SMSU with a 13-23-1 overall record, 8-14 NSIC.  The Mustangs need to sweep this weekend's four-game series with Minnesota Crookston and receive help from other teams to qualify for the NSIC tournament next week in St. Cloud, Minn.

In game two, McGlauflin (3-4) continued his strong pitching as of late, allowing just six hits and one walk, while recording five strikeouts to pick up the victory.  The right-hander threw just 89 pitches and has now pitched at least 7 2/3 innings in his last three starts, allowing just four earned runs in 23 2/3 innings during that span.

SMSU started the scoring in game two using a two-out rally in the third inning to push across the game's first run.  Steven Kremer started the rally with a two-out single, before moving to second on a walk to Kyle Young.  Ness then delivered a run-scoring single to give SMSU an early 1-0 lead.

SMSU added to the lead in the fourth as Ryan Engels and Josh Hanson collected back-to-back one-out singles, Jon Ellis followed with a sac bunt to put runners on second and third.  Jordon Kontz then stepped up and reached on an infield single to score Engels and make the score 2-0.  Hanson attempted to score on the play, but was thrown out at the plate.

The Mustangs used another two-out rally in the fifth to plate another run.  Following a double play, Ness singled and came around the bases one batter later on a double by Jason Minett to give SMSU a 3-0 lead.

SMSU continued to pour it on in the seventh as Ness ripped a two-run double to score Kontz and Young, before Tanner Neale came through with a two-out RBI single to extend the lead to 6-0, which was more than enough for McGlauflin.

Ness led an 11-hit SMSU effort in game two going 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Kontz and Kremer collected two hits apiece.

In game one, SMSU opened the scoring in the second inning as Young singled before moving to second on a walk by Kremer.  A ground out put runners on the corners, before Neale reached on an infield single to score Young and give SMSU a 1-0 lead.

BSU tied the game with a run in the third and then took advantage of a walk, a hit by pitch and a throwing error to score two unearned runs in the fourth to build a 3-1 lead.

A walk and hit by pitch started another BSU rally in the fifth, as the Beavers put the game away with three more runs on three hits to push the advantage to 6-1.

Ness cut into the deficit with a two-run homer in the sixth to make the score 6-3, but the Beavers sealed the victory with four more runs in the sixth to earn their ninth straight victory.

Brandan Alfson (1-3) started and suffered the loss for SMSU allowing seven hits, five runs (three earned) in four innings, striking out four, while walking two and hitting two batters.

Kontz paced an eight-hit SMSU attack in the opener going 3 for 4 with a run scored, while Kremer finished 2 for 2 and a walk.

Southwest Minnesota State is scheduled to conclude the regular season this Friday and Saturday with a four-game series at Alumni Field versus Minnesota Crookston.
