MARSHALL, Minn.
– Southwest Minnesota State University women's basektball team pulled with one with 11:20 left in the half but a 16-0 run by Dakota Wesleyan was too much for the Mustangs as they fell 69-51 Saturday afternoon in the R/A Facility.
 
Dakota Wesleyan (6-3) shot 46.8 percent (29 of 62) while connecting one five of 17 3-pointers (29.4 percent). The Tigers had four players in double-figures led by Kristin Savers with 13, followed by Micaela Erickson (12), Erica Herrold (11) and Celeste Beck (10).
 
SMSU (0-5) shot 37.7 percent (20 of 53) from the floor and 23.5 percent (4 of 17) from behind the arc. Lauren Hedlund led the Mustangs coming off the bench with her first career double-double as the freshman totaled 20 points and grabbed14 boards while Annessa Rosch contributed 11 points. Emilee Duske contributed seven rebounds along with Hope Bonlander tallying five. Hedlund powered the offense as well as she dished out three assists while Bonlander and Rosch recorded two each.
 
Southwest Minnesota State kept it close in the first half as Mustangs were down by just three at the half, 26-23.  SMSU shot 38.1 percent from the field connecting on 8 of 21 shots while DWU shot 40.7 percent (11 of 27). Lauren Hedlund led the Mustangs at half with her 11 points and seven rebounds.
 
After the break, SMSU pulled within a point after being down by as many as eight but a 16-0 run by the Tigers pulled away from the Mustangs to give them some cushion.
 
SMSU tallied 21 turnovers that led to 15 points for the Tigers. DWU recorded 17 turnovers, which led to 14 points for SMSU.
 
Southwest Minnesota State will host Winona State and Upper Iowa next Friday and Saturday. Friday game is set to tip off at 6 p.m.
