MARSHALL, Minn. – Winona State shot 62 percent from the field, including 65 percent in the second half and went on to earn a 79-55 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball on Friday night at the R/A Facility.
WSU's Alexis Foley scored a career-high 27 points on 11 of 15 shooting and also added five assists and three steals.
SMSU (0-6, 0-2 NSIC) was led by
Amaun Frazier's 11 points, while
Whitney Miller scored a career-high 10 points. The Mustangs shot just 32 percent (18 of 57) from the field, including 7 of 25 from 3-point range.
WSU held a 38-29 rebound advantage and outscored SMSU 50-20 in the paint.
WSU limited SMSU to just four points in the game's opening seven minutes to build a 22-4 lead with 12 minutes and 39 seconds left in the first half. The Warriors would continue to build on the margin and take its largest lead at 37-12 at the 6:48 mark.
WSU would take a 42-24 at halftime, limiting SMSU to just 33 percent shooting and forcing 14 turnovers, which led to 19 points. The Warriors shot 59 percent in the first half and held a 19-14 rebound advantage.
SMSU tried to rally in the second half, trimming the deficit to 53-39 with 14 minutes left in the game, but WSU answered with a quick 6-0 run to push the lead back to 20.
SMSU made one last run with seven minutes left as Frazier connected on a 3-pointer to make the score 68-53, but again WSU had an answer, outscoring SMSU 11-2 in the final seven minutes of the game.
Southwest Minnesota State concludes its homestand tomorrow taking on Upper Iowa (2-4, 0-2 NSIC) at 5 p.m.
