TUCSON, Ariz. – Mayville State pushed across the game-winning run in the top of the 12th inning to earn a 5-4 victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Thursday night at the Kino Sports Complex.
The loss snapped SMSU's six-game winning streak and drops SMSU to 8-5 overall, while MSU improves to 12-0.
SMSU scored the game's first run as
Josh Hanson, who finished the game 3 for 6, drilled a 400-foot-plus home run over the center field wall in the bottom of the second to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
The game remained 1-0 until the sixth, when a walk, a hit by pitch, an error and another walked pushed across a run. The Comets then took a 4-1 lead on a line drive to left that was misplayed into a three-run double clearing the bases. MSU had runners on the corners with no outs, but SMSU starter
Travis McGlauflin recorded a strikeout and a line-out double play to keep the deficit at 4-1.
SMSU answered right back in the home half of the sixth to tie the game back up. Hanson started the rally with a one-out single and moved to second on a single by
Tanner Neale. Elliot Serbus made the score 4-2 with a single down the left field line, before
Jason Minett stroked a two-run double into the right-center field gap to tie the game at 4-4.
MSU had a great chance to take the lead in the eighth inning. Following a leadoff triple, SMSU relief pitcher Brandyn Olson recorded a strikeout for the first out. MSU then attempted a squeeze bunt, but the batter missed and the runner was tagged out.
SMSU had plenty of chances to push break the tie, putting the leadoff man on base in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but failed to score.
MSU pushed across the game-winning run in the 12th, with a one out single, followed by a run-scoring double.
McGlauflin pitched for the first six-plus innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits with five strikeouts, while walking five and hitting one batter. Olson pitched outstanding in relief, tossing three innings, allowing just two hits with five strikeouts.
Danny Thering (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up one run on four hits in three innings with four strikeouts.
Austin Stubbs and Neale also finished the game with three hits apiece for SMSU, which ended the game with 13 hits and left 12 runners on base.
Southwest Minnesota State continues play tomorrow morning taking on Concordia-St. Paul in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 11.
