WSC cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the third on a solo home run, but that's as close as the Wildcats would come as Axelson worked out of a handful of jams to keep the Mustangs in the lead.

SMSU would add a big insurance run in the eight as Rients drilled a one-out double and later scored on a passed ball.

Axelson closed out the game in style striking out the side to finish with a career-high nine strikeouts. He walked three and hit one batter, but tossed only 109 pitches with 71 for strikes.

Rients led SMSU's eight-hit attack in game two going 3 for 4 with two runs scored, while Jon Ellis and Aflson each added two hits.

The two teams conclude the four-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m. The start time was pushed back 90 minutes to allow warmer temperatures.
