MSU takes down SMSU in road matchup

MANKATO, Minn. —
Minnesota State forced Southwest Minnesota State to commit 21 turnovers as the Mavericks defeated the Mustangs, 76-62 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball Friday night.
 
SMSU (2-15, 2-11) finished shooting 43 percent from the floor as Lauren Hedlund lead the Mustangs with 16 points while shooting 77 percent. Emilee Duske controlled the boards as she grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
 
MSU (12-5, 9-3) finshed shooting 41 perecent including 38 percent from behind the arc. Aubrey Davis paced the Mavericks as she recorded 20 points, three rebounds and three assists. Lexie Ulfers also made her mark as she contributed 18 points and grabbed five boards. Tyra Johnson led all Mavericks with six rebounds.
 
Minnesota State came out with full control as as they kept the Mustangs from scoring for nearly three minutes until Rosch hit a 3-pointer at 17:29.
 
The Mavericks went on to hold control the rest of the half and pushed its lead to the largest of the half with 1:01 left after Britney Scherber hit a 3-pointer to make it 46-22.
 
MSU led, 46-24 going into half time.
 
The Mustangs turned the ball over 12 times in the half that Mavericks capitalized on for 17 points.
 
After the break, it was all MSU as it pushed its lead to 30 with 13:55 left in the game at, 58-28. SMSU's defense stepped up and tried to fight back as it kept MSU at 60 points for nearly five minutes going down the stretch.
 
Abby Connell cashed in a 3-pointer at 7:03 to cut the lead to 61-46 but the Mavericks proved to be too much as Aubrey Davis came back with a three of her own.
 
MSU control the game the rest of the way to win its 10th conference game, 76-62.
 
Southwest Minnesota State will continue its road trip as they take on Concordia-St. Paul tomorrow at 4 p.m.
