MARSHALL, Minn. - Southwest Minnesota State picked up a pair of key Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference wins on Wednesday sweeping Concordia-St. Paul 7-5 and 12-2 at Alumni Field.
The doubleheader sweep—SMSU's first this season—gives the Mustangs a 19-21 overall record, including 12-12 in league play. CU drops to 15-19 overall, 13-13 NSIC.
In the opener, SMSU rallied from a 5-0 deficit behind a three-run home run from
Jason Minett and outstanding relief pitching from
Colton Smit.
CU jumped on SMSU early, pushing across a pair of runs in both the first and second innings and another in the third to build a 5-0 lead.
SMSU rallied in the third as
Brian Redemske reached on a bunt single and was followed by a walk to Minett.
Patrick Rients then ripped a one-out RBI double to make the score 5-1. Following a strikeout,
Brandan Alfson hit a wind-blown two-out, two-run single to cut the deficit to 5-3.
SMSU took the lead in the fourth as
Tanner Neale lead-off the frame and Redemske worked a one-out walk. Minett then crushed a 1-0 pitch over the right field fence to give SMSU a 6-5 lead.
The Mustangs added to the lead in the fifth as Alfson drilled a solo home run to right field making the score 7-5.
Smit (3-0) picked up the victory, tossing four shutout innings, allowing just one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts, retiring CU in order in three of the four innings.
Cameron Knudsen started for SMSU and lasted three innings allowing five runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
SMSU finished the game with 12 hits with Rients and Alfson both recording 3 for 4 games. Alfson and Minett both finished with three RBIs.
In game two, SMSU exploded out the gates scoring five runs on six hits in the bottom of the first. SMSU's first five batters reached base via a hit. Stubbs drove in the first run with a single, before Rients ripped a run-scoring double and was followed by an RBI single by Carlson to make the score 3-0. A wild pitch scored another run before
Cole VanderBeek came through with a two-out RBI single to push the lead to 5-0.
The Golden Bears scored a run in the fourth and threatened for more but a line out to second base closed the frame.
SMSU came right back in the bottom of the fourth with a key two-out, two-run double by Carlson to extend the margin to 7-1.
Stubbs made the score 9-1 in the sixth with a two-run home run, pushing his team-leading total to 12.
CU scored an unearned run in the seventh, but SMSU answered with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to end the game via 10-run rule. Alfson scored on a wild pitch, before VanderBeek hit a run-scoring triple to make the score 11-2. Minett then ended the game with a single through the right side to score VanderBeek.
Stubbs led SMSU's 14-hit attack going 3 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Minett, Rients, Carlson, Neale and VanderBeek all finished with two hits.
Alfson (3-2) started on the mound for SMSU and pitched his second complete game of the season. He gave up two runs (one earned) on nine hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Southwest Minnesota State continues play this Saturday hosting Augustana College for a doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m.
