Northern State cruises past SMSU

ABERDEEN, S.D. —
Northern State shot a season-high 57.6 percent from the field to cruise past Southwest Minnesota State, 84-64 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball.
 
SMSU (3-14, 1-10 NSIC) finished shooting 36.7 percent (22 of 60) from the floor and added 16 points on 24 free throws. NSU (13-3, 9-2 NSIC) finished shooting a season-high 57.6 percent (34 of 59) from the field and 75 percent (12 of 16) from the foul line.
 
NSU held a 40-30 rebound advantage, while controlling the box with a 40-26 lead in points in the paint and 15 points from second chances. The Wolves also forced the Mustangs into 13 turns, which they turned into 17 points.
 
Annessa Rosch led all scorers with 21 points (7 of 16) from the floor, including 6 for 6 from the line. Taylor Silva, Lauren Hedlund and Hope Bonlander all added eight points apiece. Bonlander controlled the boards for SMSU, pulling down eight, while Hedlund grabbed seven.
 
Northern State grabbed the early lead and built a six point lead before Silva and Rosch hit back-to-back 3-pointers to tied it 16-all with 1:55 left to play in the first quarter. NSU then capped off the quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 23-16.
 
NSU continued to hold control in the second frame, as it put together an 9-0 run midway through to lead by 16 and built it's largest lead of the half at the break, 45-25.
 
Rosch led all scorers with 13 points (4 of 10) at the half and added 4 points on perfect shooting from the charity stripe. Bonlander controlled the paint pulling down four rebounds.
 
NSU started the second half on an 11-3 run to lead by 25 with 5:39 left in the quarter. SMSU tried to put a run together down the third-quarter stretch, but trailed by 27 at the end of the quarter. NSU built its lead to 28—largest of the game—with 7:42 left to play, but SMSU went on an 11-4 run over the next 4:40 to trail by 19 with 1:57 left. NSU held a comfortable lead the rest of the game to earn the 84-64 win and to remain perfect at home.
 
Southwest Minnesota State will face MSU Moorhead tomorrow at Alex Nemzek Hall starting at 4 p.m.
