Dragons’ hot hand overpowers Mustangs

MOORHEAD, Minn. —
 The No. 10 MSU Moorhead men's basketball team shot 64.3 percent (18 of 28) from behind the arc to roll past Southwest Minnesota State Minnesota, 115-82 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball.
 
The 18 treys, is the most SMSU has allowed since the 2005-06 season. (No previous record). The last recorded record was 15 on Jan. 22, 2010, at Augustana.
 
SMSU (8-9, 4-8 NSIC) finished shooting 50 percent (34 of 68) from the floor and 33.3 percent (6 of 18) from behind the arc. MSUM capped the night off shooting 64.6 percent (42 of 65) from the field and 64.3 percent (18 of 28) from downtown.
 
Both teams grabbed 32 rebounds, while SMSU made use of 13 offensive rebounds scoring 18 second-chance points. SMSU also controlled the box scoring 44 points in the paint.
 
Mitch Weg and Joey Bartlett led SMSU with 17 points, while Taylor Schafer added 14. Drew Osmundson had a career night as he led the defense grabbing a career-high seven rebounds and primed the offense with a career-high seven assists.
 
The game was knotted at 7-all before MSUM grabbed the lead and ran with it as it built a double-digit lead with 15:03 left to play in the first half. The Dragons put together a 22-8 run over the next 5:37 to record their largest lead of the game so far at 44-21 with 7:35 left in the half. MSUM finished the last 2:46 on an 11-2 run to build its largest lead of the game at the break, 65-32.
 
MSUM continued to hold a comfortable lead in the second half, while shooting 60 percent (18 of 30) from the floor and 50 percent (5 of 10) from 3-point range to earn a 115-82 victory. MSUM lead by 45—largest of the game—with 5:09 left to play, before SMSU finished the game on a 16-4 run.
 
Southwest Minnesota State will welcome Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul into the R/A Facility next weekend.
