MARSHALL, Minn. – Shaun Condon scored a career-high 27 points on 10 of 13 shooting with three 3-pointers to lead Southwest Minnesota State to an 85-71 victory over Minnesota State on Friday night in NSIC men's basketball at the R/A Facility.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak for SMSU (9-9, 5-8 NSIC) and broke a seven-game losing streak to MSU. It was SMSU's first win over MSU since Feb. 25, 2012.
SMSU closed the night shooting 56 percent (33 of 59) from the field, including 8 of 17 from 3-point range. The Mustangs also held a 33-29 rebound advantage and committed just eight turnovers.
MSU (13-6, 8-5 NSIC) shot 47 percent from the field, but were just 3 of 15 from 3-point range. Jalen Pendleton led the Mavericks with 21 points and seven rebounds.
Carter Kirk (14),
Ryan Bruggeman (10) and
Taylor Schafer (10) all reached double figures in scoring for SMSU.
Joey Bartlett added seven points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Bruggeman dished out a career-high nine assists and also chipped in with five rebounds.
Following a slow start by both teams, SMSU's Schafer connected on a pair of 3-pointers in a 90-second span to give SMSU a 14-7 lead with 14 minutes and 25 seconds left in the half.
SMSU maintained a 23-14 advantage before using an 11-5 run midway through the half to build its largest lead of the half at 34-19 following a three-point play by
Carter Kirk with 8:17 remaining.
MSU would slowly cut into the deficit, trimming the lead to 39-36 with 2:23 left, before SMSU closed the half with a pair of field goals by Condon and another by
Turner Moen to give the Mustangs a 45-38 halftime lead.
SMSU shot 59 percent in the first half with five 3-pointers on 10 attempts. Condon led SMSU with 14 points in the opening half.
MSU cut SMSU's lead down to six twice in the second, including 57-51 with 12:39 remaining, but SMSU answered with a 11-3 run over the next four minutes to push the lead to 68-54.
Condon later connected on a 3-pointer with 6:10 remaining to give SMSU its largest lead of the game at 75-58 and the Mustangs never looked back in earning the victory.
Southwest Minnesota State will host Concordia-St. Paul tomorrow with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.
