CSP defeats SMSU on Saturday night

Concordia-St. Paul's Fredenburg recorded her fifth double-double of the season to help defeat Southwest Minnesota State 78-70 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball Saturday night in the R/A Facility.

SMSU (3-17, 1-13 NSIC) finished shooting 39.7 percent (25 of 63) from the floor and 80 percent (12 of 15) from the free-throw line. CSP (9-11, 5-9 NSIC) shot 46 percent (29 of 63) from the field and a percent 12 of 12 from the charity stripe.

Annessa Rosch led the Mustangs with 17 points (6 of 14), while Hope Bonlander added 16 points (6 of 10). Lauren Hedlund scored nine points (3 of 8) and Taylor Silva dished out five assists. Hedlund paced the defense with 11 rebounds and Taylor Holicky pulled down six. SMSU made use of 16 offensive boards converting them into 13 points.

SMSU took an early lead and kept control through the quarter and led by as many as seven. CSP cut the Mustang lead down to two with a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left in the quarter. CSP went on to tie the game at 17-all 16 seconds into the second quarter and eventually took a two-point lead with 7:39 left in the half. The Golden Bears continued to lead down the quarter stretch and built a six-point lead at the break.

After half, CSP built its largest lead of the game following a 3-pointer to lead 43-33 with 9:22 left in the quarter. SMSU went on an 18-8 run over the next six minutes to tie the game at 51-all. SMSU retook the lead after a 3-pointer by Abby Connell and layup by Hedlund to lead by five with 1:54 left in the frame. CSP would close the quarter on a 7-1 run to take a one-point lead. CSP allowed SMSU to score just two points over the first 5:35 of the fourth quarter and built a 10-point lead with 4:25 left to play. The Golden Bears would hold off the Mustangs comeback attempt to record a 78-70 victory.

Southwest Minnesota State will head to St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth next weekend.
