MARSHALL, Minn. – No. 5-ranked Augustana University shot a season-high 65 percent from the field—including 82 percent in the first half—in earning a 103-88 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in NSIC men's basketball on Friday at the R/A Facility.
Augustana senior Daniel Jansen scored 26 points on 9 of 16 shooting with three 3-pointers and in the process became the NSIC's all-time leading scorer. He now has amassed 1,464 points in NSIC games only.
Augustana (21-2, 18-1 NSIC) finished the game connecting on 14 of 23 3-pointers and held a 27-25 rebound advantage. It was just the second time this season SMSU has been outrebounded in a game.
Casey Schilling added 25 points for the Vikings, while Jordan Spencer chipped in with 17 points and seven assists.
Southwest Minnesota State (12-12, 8-11 NSIC) shot a solid 53 percent (34 of 64) from the field, including 9 of 22 from 3-point range.
Joey Bartlett led the Mustangs with 25 points on 9 of 15 from the field, while also adding three assists and two steals.
Shaun Condon poured in 17 points for SMSU, with teammates
Mitch Weg (16),
Turner Moen (10) and
Ryan Bruggeman (10) also reaching double figures. Weg led SMSU with six rebounds.
The two teams played a tight opening 10 minutes with Augustana leading 32-28 with nine minutes and 51 seconds left following a 3-pointer by SMSU's Moen.
The Vikings then responded with 24-6 in the next six minutes pushed the lead to 56-36 at the 3:26 mark. SMSU cut the deficit to 14 points on two occasions later in the half, but Augustana closed the half on a 6-0 run to build a 64-44 halftime lead.
Augustana, which connected on 18 of its first 20 shots in the game, finished the opening half shooting 82 percent (22 of 27), including 9 of 10 from 3-point range.
SMSU shot a solid 56 percent (18 of 32) from the field, but were just 4 of 11 from 3-point range. Weg led the Mustangs with 11 points in the opening half, while Condon added 10 first half points.
SMSU trimmed the deficit to 66-52 early in the second half, but Augustana scored seven of the next nine points to make the score 73-54 with 14:57 left in the game.
The Vikings would later take an 81-60 lead with 12:45 remaining, but a 3-pointer by Condon started a 13-3 run as the Mustangs cut the deficit to 84-73 with 10 minutes left in the game.
SMSU would later trail 88-77 with eight minutes on the clock, but that was as close as the Mustangs would come as the Vikings held off any comeback attempt.
Southwest Minnesota State will close out the home regular season schedule tomorrow taking on Wayne State College for "Senior Night" starting at 7 p.m. SMSU's lone senior
