SMSU baseball opens season with a pair of losses

WICHITA, Kan. –
The Southwest Minnesota State University baseball team opened the 2016 season today with dropping a pair of games to Newman University (Kan.) at McCarthy Field.
 
Newman (8-2) won the opener 13-0, behind a 1-hitter from Lucas Schauer, and won game two by a score of 12-2. The Jets are riding a seven-game winning streak.
 
In the opener, Schauer moved to 3-0 on the season, allowing just one walk with 10 strikeouts to earn the win. Tanner Picht collected SMSU's lone hit with a single in the third inning.
 
Newman broke open a scoreless game in the third inning scoring nine runs on nine hits with one SMSU error.
 
Alex Jorgenson (0-1) suffered the loss for the Mustangs, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings with two walks and two strikeouts.
 
In game two, Newman scored single runs in the first, second and third innings, before opening the game up with a six-run fourth.
 
SMSU, which finished the game with eight hits, picked up its first run of the season in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by Picht. The Mustangs pushed across another run in the seventh on an RBI single by Jake Schultz.
 
Jayden Fleck led the Mustang offense with a pair of hits.
 
Justin Clark (0-1) started and pitched the first 3 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs (six earned)on seven hits with six strikeouts and a pair of walks.
 
The teams conclude the four-game series tomorrow with a pair of 7-inning games starting at 11 a.m.
