MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State shot a season-high 64 percent and held a 42-17 rebound advantage in earning a 100-68 victory over Minnesota Crookston in NSIC men's basketball on Saturday night.
It's the second straight game SMSU has shot a season-high from the field (SMSU shot 61 percent last night versus Bemidji State) and it's the first time the Mustangs have held a plus-25 rebound margin since Nov. 15, 2003. It was also the second time this season SMSU has reached 100 points.
SMSU improves to 12-11 overall, 8-10 NSIC, while UMC suffered its 14
th straight loss in dropping to 3-19 overall, 1-17 NSIC.
SMSU had six players score in double figures with
Carter Kirk leading the way with 14 points and eight rebounds.
MJ Delmore (13),
Shaun Condon (13),
Mitch Weg (12),
Taylor Schafer (10) and
Joey Bartlett (10) also reached double digits.
Ryan Bruggeman finished with seven points, six assists and four steals, while Delmore and Condon each added four assists.
UMC was led by C.J. Polk, who scored 15 points.
SMSU closed the game making 38 of 59 field goals, including 8 of 14 (57.1) from 3-point range. UMC shot 40 percent (22 of 55) from the field and were 7 of 21 from behind the arc.
SMSU scored the game's first four points in jumping to a 25-5 lead in the game's first nine minutes. The lead would balloon to 58-19, before the Mustangs finished with a 58-24 halftime advantage. SMSU scored 56 points in the opening half last night versus BSU.
SMSU's largest lead of the game came with 9:36 left in the game at 84-42.
Southwest Minnesota State will look to extend its winning streak to three games next Friday, Feb. 12, hosting No. 1 ranked Augustana University starting at 8 p.m.
