SMSU women's basketball announces two signings

MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State University head women's basketball coach Tom Webb announced Friday the signing of two high school student-athletes to letters of intent to continue their academic and basketball careers at SMSU.

Joining the program for the 2018-19 season include Jenna Borchers from Grimes, Iowa, and Lily Schoknecht from Anoka, Minnesota.

Borchers, a 5-foot-6 guard, is a senior at Dallas Center-Grimes High School, where she is a three-year letter winner including earning third team all-state honors as a junior. She averaged 14.8

points last season, shooting 44 percent from the field and 39 percent from 3-point range. She recorded 80 steals and dished out 44 assists. She also garnered all-region, all-district and all-conference accolades following both her sophomore and junior seasons. Borchers has also been a letter winner in both cross country and track & field.

"Jenna has the ability to shoot it deep and/or get to the rim and make a play," Webb said. "She is a combo guard that can play both on the wing and at the point. Jenna is a very smart player that sees the floor and understands when and how to score."

Schoknecht, a 6-foot forward, is a senior at Anoka High School. She is a three-year letter winner for the Tornadoes and was a member of Anoka's 2016 state tournament team. She averaged seven points and four rebounds per game last season. Schoknecht is also an all-conference honoree in volleyball.

"Lily is the kid that brings the energy and effort every single day," Webb said. "She has the ability to play on the perimeter offensively, yet guard inside and out. Lily's tenacious attitude to rebound and her energy will correlate well with our ability to press."

"Both Jenna and Lily are tough, competitive kids that have a very high basketball IQ," Webb said. "Both players fit our style of play and have a hunger for excellence."
