SMSU comeback attempt falls just short

MARSHALL, Minn.- Southwest Minnesota State (2-4) outscored Winona State (6-1) 27-9 during a 10-minute stretch in the second half and had a late push in the final minute fall just short as WSU escaped with a 68-66 win on Saturday evening in the R/A Facility.

Meleah Reinhart led the Mustangs in scoring with 14 points on 5 of 9 shooting from the floor including 4 of 7 from deep. Sadie Stelter scored 13 while Erin Baxter added 12 points. 

Taylor Holicky finished with 12 boards on the night including five on the offensive end while Reinhart and Baxter each added two steals for SMSU.

SMSU held Winona State to just 13 of 34 shooting (38 percent) in the opening quarter as the unbeaten Warriors led 13-9 after the first ten minutes of play. The Mustangs, conversely, shot just 9 of 30 (30 percent) from the floor in the game's opening quarter.

Taylor Holicky hit a trey and a layup in the opening minute of the second quarter to give SMSU a one point lead at 14-13. The Mustangs and Warriors traded short runs to end the first half as Winona State took a 30-26 lead into the break.

The Warriors' offense came out on fire in the second half as WSU used an 18-0 run to begin the second half, giving Winona State a a commanding 48-26 lead just past the halfway point of the third quarter.

The Mustangs then carried the momentum that started with a 5-0 run to cut into the Warriors' lead during the remainder of the third quarter and the early portion of the fourth. Trailing by 14 points down 57-43, the Mustangs went on a 10-0 run to make it a four point game with just under five minutes remaining in the game.

The Mustangs' high press held up until a 7-0 WSU run gave the visitors a nine point lead with under a minute to play.

SMSU hit a pair of free throws, a three pointer and a layup in the final 14 seconds to give the Warriors a scare before eventually falling just short.
