MINNETONKA, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State baseball team opened Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play today with a split versus Concordia-St. Paul played at Veterans Field.

CSP (7-7, 1-1 NSIC) used a no-hitter from Gus Varland to win the opener 6-1, but SMSU used a strong pitching performance from
Cole Petersen to earn a 2-0 victory in game two.

Petersen (3-0) tossed career-high 7 1/3 innings, scattering five hits with three strikeout and no walks.
Alex Jorgensen recorded the final three outs to pick up his third save of the season.

SMSU (6-6, 1-1 NSIC) broke a scoreless game in the fifth inning as
Derek Branson led off with triple and scored on a
Brian Redemske RBI single.

SMSU added to the lead in the seventh as Redemske double and later scored on a sac fly from
Shane Sellner to push the lead to 2-0.

CSP had its best chance to score in the eight inning, loading the bases with one out. SMSU's
Jared Tschetter came on in relief of
Shawn Williams and promptly recorded a ground ball double play to end the threat.

Redemske led SMSU's eight-hit attack in game two, finishing 2 for 4 with an RBI and run scored.

In the opener, Varland was dominate for the second time this season versus SMSU. He recorded 14 strikeouts with two walks on 105 pitches, including 68 for strikes. On March 5, Varland tossed a seven-inning complete game four-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

SMSU scored its lone run in the sixth as
Cole VanderBeek walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a ground out. With two outs,
Jayden Fleck struck out, but reached on a wild pitch, allowing VanderBeek to score.
Justin Clark (0-1) took the loss for SMSU, allowing all six runs (three earned) on 11 hits with two strikeouts.
The two teams will conclude the four-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. at Veterans Field on the campus of Minnetonka High School.
