Late rally lifts SMSU past Northern State

TUCSON, Ariz. --
Tanner Strommen delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 3-1 victory over Northern State in non-conference baseball on Thursday at the Kino Sports Complex.

SMSU (2-4) trailed 1-0 in the eighth inning before rallying back and snapping a four-game losing streak. Josh Cook started the rally with a single, but was erased on a fielder's choice by Cole VanderBeek. Brady Lanoue came through with a single to put runners on the corners, before Liam Lopez reached safely on a fielder's choice scoring VanderBeek with the tying run. Following a sac bunt to put runners on second and third, Strommen came through with a two-run single to push SMSU into the lead at 3-1.

NSU (4-3) put together a rally in the ninth with runners at first and second, but relief pitcher Alex Jorgensen got out of the jam with a game-ending double play.

SMSU starter Justin Clark was solid, tossing six innings, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts. Cole Petersen (2-0) earned the victory with two-plus innings of shutout relief, while Jorgensen recorded his first save of the season.

SMSU was held to just two hits in the first six innings, but finished the game with six hits. Strommen led the way with two hits and two RBIs.

Southwest Minnesota State will face Jamestown University on Friday for a 10 a.m. CST doubleheader.
