MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State completed a four-game weekend sweep over the University of Mary on Sunday with a pair of walk-off victories, taking game one 3-2 and game two by a score of 15-14.

Tanner Strommen's single in the bottom of the seventh was the game-winning hit in the opener, while SMSU scored the game-winning run in game two in the bottom of the ninth on a throwing error by the U-Mary catcher.

SMSU (13-25, 8-20 NSIC), which cracked out a season-high 24 hits in game two—with just one extra base hit—led 14-8 in the ninth inning, before U-Mary rallied with six runs to tie the game.

The four-game sweep is SMSU's first since the 2014 season and the first at Alumni Field since the 2010.

th for head coach
Paul Blanchard in his 21-year career at SMSU.

In game one,
Cole VanderBeek started the rally with lead off single to left-center field.
Brady Lanoue was hit by a pitch to put runners and first and second with no outs. Moments later, VanderBeek was caught in a run-down between second and third, but a U-Mary fielder ran into VanderBeek for defensive interference, putting runners and second and third. Strommen followed with the game-winning single on an 0-1 pitch from U-Mary pitcher Cory Dixon.

SMSU pushed across the game's first run in the bottom of the first as VanderBeek stroked a lead-off double and later scored on a clutch two-out single by Branson.

U-Mary (9-32, 5-27 NSIC) tied the game in the third taking advantage of a lead off walk and an RBI single by Travis Stevens.

The Marauders took the lead in the sixth as Drew Feuerbach bounced a single through a drawn in infield to make the score 2-1.

SMSU quickly answered in the home half of the sixth as Branson singled to start the rally and moved to third following a sac bunt and a ground out.
Jayden Fleck then smacked a run-scoring single up the middle to tie the game at 2-2.

Erik Thorvilson earned a no-decision for SMSU throwing five innings, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts and four walks.

Shawn Williams (2-1) tossed a scoreless seventh inning to record the victory.

In game two, U-Mary used a triple and a ground out to take an early 1-0 advantage.

SMSU came right back to take the lead in the home half of the first inning as
Shane Sellner drilled a two-out, two-run single to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.

The Mustangs added to the lead in the second with a big two-out rally. VanderBeek ripped a two-out single to center and promptly stole second moments later.
Brady Lanoue followed with an RBI single to make the score 3-1. Strommen singled to advance Lanoue to third base, who then later scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 4-1.

The Marauders used a two-out, two-run double by Drew Feuerbach in the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-3.

SMSU regained a three-run lead in the fifth as Branson drilled a solo home run over the left field fence and later in the frame,
Derek Smith delivered a two-out RBI single to make the score 6-3.

SMSU added to the lead in the sixth, scoring three runs on three hits. Branson scored the first run with a sac fly, before Sellner smacked an RBI single to make the score 8-3. Fleck would push across the final run of the frame with a sac bunt to score Lopez and expand the cushion to 9-3.

Following a three-run seventh inning by U-Mary to make the score 9-6, SMSU countered with a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Branson to make the score 10-6.

U-Mary answered with two runs in the eight, but SMSU put together a four-run rally in the eighth inning to build a 14-8 lead. Smith singled in the first run, before VanderBeek slapped a two-run single to make the score 13-8. Lanoue capped the inning with another RBI single to give the Mustangs a six-run lead.

The Marauders would not go away and tied the game in the ninth with six runs on five hits off of four pitchers in the inning.

SMSU put together the game-winning rally in the ninth as Lopez coaxed a walk to start the inning. Following a sac bunt by Sellner, Fleck hit an infield single putting runners on the corners with one out. With
Brian Redemske at the plate, Fleck stole second and on the play the throw by U-Mary's catcher to the second baseman was short-hopped and bounced away from the fielder. Lopez sprinted home on the play and slide across for the game-winning run.

Sellner set a career-high with five hits, finishing 5 for 5 with three RBIs. Lanoue collected a career-high four hits, three runs scored and two RBIs, while Smith also had a career-high four hits.

Jeremy Stouffer pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Southwest Minnesota State continues its homestand on Wednesday taking on Upper Iowa University for a doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m. at Alumni Field.
