MARSHALL, Minn. - Southwest Minnesota State University is celebrating 50 years during the 2017-18 academic year.

During the next few months, SMSU Athletics will take a look back and fondly remember some of the most memorable events, teams, coaches and student-athletes over the past 50 years.

This week, the
1974 baseball team:Â Â

The 1974 baseball team won the program's first-ever conference championship and also won the NAIA District 13 title to advance to the Midwest Region Tournament.

The team finished 23-16 overall, 10-4 in the Northern Intercollegiate Conference and in the process set 10 school records during the season.

Following the regular season, SMSU defeated St. John's two games to one, in an NAIA District best-of-three series in Collegeville. The district series win advanced SMSU to the NAIA Regional Tournament in Waverly, Iowa, where SMSU recorded a 2-2 mark to earn a second-place finish.

Mike Barry, John Comer, Lionel Bolden and Bryce Pack were all named first team all-conference, with Barry leading the team in hitting with a .350 batting average. Bolden smacked a team-high six home runs and finished with a team-high 24 RBIs.

Doug Dobmeier finished 8-2 on the mound with a 2.68 ERA in 74 innings, while Joe Driscoll was 7-4, tossing a team-high 85 innings with team-leading 74 strikeouts. Pack ended the season with a team-low 2.22 ERA.
