Mustang Memories: 2013 Soccer Team

MARSHALL, Minn. - Southwest Minnesota State University is celebrating 50 years during the 2017-18 academic year.
 
During the next few months, SMSU Athletics will take a look back and fondly remember some of the most memorable events, teams, coaches and student-athletes over the past 50 years.
 
This week, the 2013 soccer team:  
 
The Southwest Minnesota State University women's soccer team had a Cinderella season in 2013 - finishing the season 16-4-2 overall and setting numerous records and experience many firsts along the way. SMSU opened the season with 11 straight wins - setting the school record for consecutive wins and consecutive wins to start a season. SMSU finished the season setting the program record for wins in a single-season (16), qualified for its first NSIC tournament since 2007. Although SMSU took a first round exit in the NSIC tournament, The Mustangs went on to qualify for their first NCAA tournament in the program's 18-year history. SMSU wasn't done there, as the Mustangs did something else that hasn't been done in SMSU's previous 17 years of play - beat a nationally ranked opponent - SMSU defeated No. 14 Central Missouri 3-1 to advance to play No. 6 Minnesota State in the NCAA second round. SMSU followed its biggest win in program history with an even bigger win, a 2-1 victory over the Mavericks gave SMSU its first defeat of MSU in program history and advanced them to the Sweet 16 where the historic season was put to bed by a 2-0 loss to NSIC foe Minnesota Duluth. The team featured six all conference selections, six all-region selections, one all-american, the NSIC Coach of the Year, the NSIC Goalkeeper of the Year, and the Central Regional Player of the Year.

SEASON FULL OF FIRSTS
-The Southwest Minnesota State soccer team earned its first national ranking in program history on Sept. 23 when the Mustangs debuted in a tied for the 18th slot in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/ Continental Tire Division II Top 25 Poll. 
-The Mustangs received their first NCAA tournament berth in SMSU's 18-year program history.
-The Mustangs made their first NCAA Sweet 16 tournament appearance in SMSU's 18-year program history.
-The Mustangs finished with 16 overall wins in 2013 -- the most wins ever in program history. 
-The Mustangs recorded 11 conference wins -- the most NSIC wins in a season.
-The Mustangs clinched their first winning season since the 1999 season. 
-SMSU defeated Minnesota Duluth 3-0 on Sept. 29 to give SMSU its first win over UMD in program history. 
-The Mustangs have had five NSIC Players of the Week -- the most in a single-season. 
-Miranda Cadena became the first Mustang to score double-digit goals in a single season since Joelle Dean in 2004.
-Kendahl Fisher recorded her 10th and 11th assists of the season on Oct. 26 versus Concordia-St. Paul to set the new SMSU single-season record for assists in a season. 
-SMSU clinched a spot in the NSIC tournament for the first time since the 2007 season. SMSU is 7-15-1 all-time in the NSIC tournament.
-SMSU defeated its first nationally ranked opponent with its 3-1 win over No. 14 Central Missouri on Nov. 15 in the NCAA tournament first round.
-SMSU secured its first NCAA tournament win with its 3-1 win over No. 14 Central Missouri on Nov. 15.
-SMSU defeated Minnesota State for the first time in program history. 
-Miranda CadenaDanica Requejo and Brienna Dehkes became SMSU's first NSCAA All-Central Region selections
-Miranda Cadena became SMSU's first All-American (Daktronics & NSCAA/Continental Tire).
