MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State's Caleigh Rodning scored a career-high 34 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds to lead the Mustangs to a 91-83 victory over Wisconsin-Parkside in  its home opener, as part of the inaugural Ramada Classic in the R/A Facility.
SMSU (1-2) shot 36 percent from the field and 24 percent from beyond the arc while UWP (1-2) shot 42 percent from the field and 43 percent from the 3-point line. SMSU shot 73 percent from the free throw line after going to the line 38 times (27 of 38), while UWP went 13 of 18 from the free-throw line.
The Mustangs crashed the boards to record 38 points in the paint as the Rangers earned 32. SMSU outscored UWP in second chance points as Mustangs earned 17 over the Rangers' 15.
Tonight's win was the 100th  for SMSU head coach, Tom Webb, as a division II head coach in his 11th season.
Rodning is the first Mustang to have a 30-point game since Megan Wittkop on Jan. 6, 2007. Sara Teske added to the victory with a career-high in both points and rebounds with 11 and 13 respectively. Rodning went 11 of 13 at the free throw line and 100 percent from beyond the arc.
Four Mustangs earned double-digit points, in addition to Rodning and Teske, Sadie Stelter added 12 and Sarah Buysse added 11.
SMSU out-rebounded UWP 55-42.
Alli Bettencourt led the Rangers with 25 points and 11 rebounds.
The Mustangs opened the first quarter with a 5-0 run capped off by a 3-pointer from Stelter and maintained the lead until Bellencourt tied the game at 13-13. UWP outscored SMSU in the final minutes of the first quarter to gain a 19-17 advantage going into the second quarter.
The Mustangs regained the lead at the 6:12 mark of the second quarter on a 3-pointer by Sarah Buysse to make the score 27-26. SMSU maintained the lead for the rest of the half in building a 38-35 half-time lead.
The two teams played a tight third quarter with the Rangers taking the lead in the final minute to build a 65-64 lead after three quarters.
With the game tied at 78, SMSU's Jenna Borchers hit one of two free throws with 3:48 remaining in the game. Following a missed shot by UWP, Rodning scored with 3:14 remaining to make the sure 81-78.
UWP cut the deficit to 81-80 but with 2:07 remaining, a Stelter layup gave the Mustang a three-point cushion. The Mustangs went on an 11-0 run to earn the 91-83 victory.
SMSU returns to action tomorrow at 4 p.m. against William Jewell (1-1) in the R/A Facility to continue the Ramada Classic.Â
