MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State (2-2) connected on a team-record 19 3-pointers to earn a 90-67 victory over William Jewell (1-2) on Saturday afternoon in the R/A Facility, to conclude the inaugural Ramada Classic.
Tonight's victory was the first back-to-back victory for the Mustangs since the 2015-2016 season.Â
SMSU shot 45 percent from the field (29 of 64) and 51 percent from beyond of arc (19 of 37) while WJC shot 44 percent from the field (27 of 61) but was held to only 29 percent (7 of 24) from the 3-point line. The Mustangs connected on 13 of 15 free throws over WJC's 6 of 14.
Erin Baxter earned her third career 20-point game with a team high 21 points. Baxter went 5 of 6 beyond the arc and 2 of 2 from the free throw line.
Meleah Reinhart and
Caleigh Rodning each contributed double figures to pitch in 17 points. Rodning also earned a back-to-back double-double with 10 rebounds.
The Mustangs outrebounded the Cardinals 40-34 in tonights' victory.
WJC's Codee Myers and Kiara Bradley led the Cardinals with 11 points each.
SMSU's record-breaking night from the 3-point line aided the victory as the game only had the score tied or any lead changes twice throughout the four quarters.Â
William Jewell went on an 8-0 run in the first quarter for a 10-5 lead at the 6:42 mark and the Cardinals kept that lead to head into the second quarter up 19-17.Â
The Mustangs earned the lead after connecting on eight 3-pointers in the second quarter alone to total 11 3-pointers in the first half, including three consecutive threes from Baxter,
Jenna Borchers, and Rodning.
The Mustangs opened the half with a 10-point run to create space and earn a 59-36 lead. The Mustangs held the Cardinals to a mere nine points in the third quarter as the Mustangs outscored them recording 27 in the quarter. SMSU never looked back as the Mustangs held a 21-point cushion until the final 30 seconds as Baxter made two free throws for the final score, 90-67.Â
