SMSU wrestling travels to face nationally-ranked Minnesota State

MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team (0-5, 0-4 NSIC) travels to No. 9 Minnesota State (4-1, 2-0 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon for a conference battle at 2 p.m. in the Taylor Center. 
 
SMSU NOTES: SMSU hosted Upper Iowa and Augustana last weekend to extend its losing streak. Cortez Arredondo and Justin Haneke were the lone Mustangs to earn victories after both went undefeated this weekend. Haneke and Arredondo are both undefeated in the conference with Haneke (149) at a 7-7 overall record and 2-0 in the conference while Arredondo (157) leads the team with a 19-5 overall record and 4-0 in the conference. 
 
Haneke won by tech fall (21-4) over Upper Iowa's Ryan Roth and won by fall at 4:19 over Augie's Tyler Wagener for the first Mustang victory of both duals.  
 
Arredondo earned decision victories over both UIU's Mac Spotts with a 5-2 final and Augie's Colin Ayers for a 10-8 final.  
 
HWT Andrew Petersen was dealt his first two conference losses this season. Petersen comes in second on the team with a 17-8 overall and now a 2-2 record in the conference. 
 
Against Augie's Matt Naig, Petersen lead 3-2 until the final ten seconds when Naig earned a take-down within the final four seconds. 
 
Arredondo is ranked eighth in the latest NWCA Coaches poll released on Jan. 11. 

SMSU will also send unattached wrestlers to the St. John's University Open on Jan. 26, in Collegeville, Minn.
 
MINNESOTA STATE NOTES: Minnesota State ranks No. 9 in the latest NWCA poll released on Jan. 11., after previously ranked in the sixth-spot. MSU has four individual wrestlers ranked in the Top-12, including George Farmah who is ranked No. 1 at 133, Zach Johnston ranked No. 4 at 174, Kyle Rathman ranked No. 7 at 149, and Seth Elwood ranked No. 12 at 165. 
 
MSU's lone defeat this season was dealt by CSU-Pueblo, who is currently tied at seventh according to the NWCA poll. 
 
In Minnesota State's 28-9 conference victory over Minot State, MSU won all but two bouts, and against Upper Iowa, each team won five with the victory clinched with a tech fall win in the final bout of 149. 
 
MSU hosts Northern State on Friday at 7 p.m. before taking on SMSU on Saturday. 
 
SERIES HISTORY: MSU leads the series 29-9 winning 27 of the last 28 duals. The last time SMSU earned a victory was in the 2013-14 season with a 31-9 final in Marshall. The Mavericks won the last meeting a season ago with a 27-6 victory in Marshall. 
 
MUSTANG HEAD COACH — Jesse Nelson is in his 12th season as head coach at SMSU in 2018-19. Nelson was named the fourth coach in the program history on Aug. 22, 2007. Nelson, the 2013-14 NSIC Coach of the Year, Nelson has a career dual record of 81-92-1, including 30-54 in conference matches. During his tenure, Nelson has groomed 20 national qualifiers--including three two-time qualifiers and three three-time qualifiers--along with 11 All-NSIC honorees.
