MARSHALL, Minn. – Caleigh Rodning became the 20th Southwest Minnesota State women's basketball player to score 1,000 points in a career in SMSU's 90-46 victory over Upper Iowa on Friday night in the R/A Facility. Rodning, a junior forward, came into the game just 13-points shy of the accolade and finished the night with 1,001.
SMSU (12-12, 9-10 NSIC) shot 50 percent from the field and 50 percent from the 3-point line while UIU (3-24, 0-19 NSIC) shot 35 percent from the field and 27 from beyond the arc.
SMSU had three players in double-digits with Sarah Buysse leading the way with 16 points followed by Abuk Akoi with 15 and Caleigh Rodning with 14.
Rodning, who ranks third in free throw percentage with 83 percent and fourth in free throws made with 348, scored her 1,000th point at the free throw line with
SMSU's hot-shooting began with a 12-0 run in to extend a 5-3 lead to 17-3 in the first six minutes of the game. Minutes later, SMSU extended the lead to finish the first quarter on a 10-0 to end the first quarter up 32-8.
SMSU maintained the lead and scored another 11-0 run to finish the first half with a 55-18 lead.
The Mustangs finished the second half with the same intensity to finish the third quarter with a 43-point margin with a 75-32 lead.
Tonight's victory was the program's largest margin victory over a Division II program since defeating UM-Morris in 2002.
UIU was led in scoring by Haley Martin with 12 points.
Southwest Minnesota State continues action tomorrow at 4 p.m. hosting Winona State for "senior night."
