Mustang and Wolves meet tonight in NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament championship

    MONDAY NIGHT
•The Southwest Minnesota State University men's basketball team (18-13) continues play in the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament on Tuesday night facing Northern State University (25-6) in the championship game with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m. at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.
•Tonight's game will be the second straight season the teams have faced each other in the title game with NSU winning last season, 81-75.
•SMSU, the No. 5 seed from the South Division, advanced to the quarterfinals following an 86-81 win over MSU Moorhead (No. 4 North) on Wednesday, a 75-62 victory over the No. 8N, Bemidji State on Sunday night and then an 84-78 overtime win over No. 3S Wayne State on Monday.
•SMSU and NSU will be meeting for the second time this season with NSU winning 91-81 in Aberdeen, S.D., on Feb. 9.  
•SMSU has won 10 of its last 11 NSIC Tournament games since 2017.
•The winner of Tuesday's game will receive the NSIC's automatic bid to the NCAA Central Region Tournament on March 16-19.
•NSU, the NSIC regular season overall champion, was ranked No. 3 in last week's NCAA Central Region rankings.

    SMSU ALL-TIME IN THE NSIC TOURNAMENT
•Since the NSIC Tournament started in 2000, SMSU is 26-16 all-time with two championships (2012 & 2017).
•SMSU has advanced to the semifinals 12 times and have played in eight championship games (2001, 2002, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2017, 2018, 2019).
•The Mustangs are 10-2 at home, 2-7 on the road and 14-7 in neutral site tournament games.

    SERIES HISTORY VS. NORTHERN STATE
•SMSU and Northern State meet for the 96th time tonight with NSU leading 64-31.
•Tonight will be the ninth meeting in the NSIC Tournament with NSU holding a 5-3 advantage, including winning 81-75 in last season's championship game.
•NSU has won eight the last 11 meetings overall since the 2014-15 season.
•This will be the sixth meeting between the two teams on a neutral site with NSU winning three of the previous five.
•SMSU head coach Brad Bigler is 8-9 all-time versus NSU.

    ABOUT SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA STATE
•SMSU enters Tuesday's game with an 18-13 overall record following last night's 84-78 overtime victory over Wayne State.  
•SMSU placed fifth in the NSIC South Division standings and ninth overall with a 10-12 league mark.
•Senior guard Ryan Bruggeman led the Mustangs on Monday with a game-high 34 points and 11 rebounds, while setting a school and NSIC Tournament single-game record with 17 free throws made on 19 attempts.
•Senior guard Taylor Schafer added 19 points with five 3-pointers, while senior forward Michael Lee hit on four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points in the victory.
•Bruggeman, who has scored 20 or more points in 15 of the last 16 games, including 25 or more in the last seven games, is averaging a team-high 26.4 ppg with a team-high 174 assists and team-high 71 steals. He has scored 20 or more points 23 times and 30 or more points 11 times this season.
•Senior guard Taylor Schafer is averaging 13 ppg with a team-leading 72 3-pointers.
•Sophomore forward Kenny Byers is averaging 10.3 ppg and 4.0 rpg.
•SMSU is shooting 49 percent from the field, 41 percent from 3-point range, 81 percent from the free throw line and is minus-5.2 in rebound margin.
•SMSU is averaging 80 points per game, while opponents are averaging 79 points per game.

    SMSU HEAD COACH BRAD BIGLER
Brad Bigler, the all-time wins leader in program history, is in his 10th season as head coach and has an overall record of 179-123, including 122-96 in conference play.
•The 2012-13 and 2016-17 NSIC Coach of the Year, Bigler has led SMSU to six winning seasons, including one 28-win season, one 25-win season and two 19-win seasons.
•SMSU won NSIC tournament titles in 2012 and 2017 and also won the NSIC South Division championship in both 2016-17 and 2017-18.  
•SMSU's 11th head coach, Bigler spent six seasons (2003-09) as an assistant coach at SMSU, including the last three as associate head coach.

    MUSTANG TIP-OFF TIDBITS
•SMSU has committed 10 or less turnovers in its last 13 games.  
•SMSU has outrebounded its opponent just twice in its last 20 games, but last night was one of the two, as SMSU held a 37-32 edge over Wayne State. SMSU finished last in the NSIC in rebound margin (-8.5).
•Senior Ryan Bruggeman's 296 field goals this season is a new school record as he surpassed the record of 290 held by Sam Leggett (1975-76) during SMSU's win over Wayne State on Monday.
•Bruggeman also broke the record he set last season for free throws made in a single-season during Monday's win. He has 183 this season moving past the 171 he set a season ago.
•Seniors Bruggeman and Taylor Schafer hold the school record for career games played with 127 following Monday's game.  
•Senior Michael Lee has played in 124 games which ranks tied for third. He will move into sole possession of third place tonight.
•Lee recently became the sixth player in team history to reach 200 career 3-pointers and has now connected on 207.    
•SMSU has connected on 295 3-pointers this season breaking the school record of 273 set last season.
•SMSU's 41.6 percent 3-point shooting this season ranks first in team single-season history.
•SMSU's 81.4 percent free throw shooting currently ranks first in team single-season history.
•SMSU has shot 48 percent or higher from the field in 11 of its last 14 games.  

    BRUGGEMAN EARNS ALL-NSIC HONORS
•Senior Ryan Bruggeman was named first team All-NSIC for the third consecutive season on Feb. 28. He is the first player in team history to earn first team honors three times.
•He finished the NSIC season ranking first in scoring (27.0), first in steals (2.4), second in field goals made (217), fourth in free throw pct. (92.0), fourth in assists (5.1) and 13th in assist/turnover ratio (1.8).  

    BRUGGEMAN WINS NSIC SCORING TITLE
•Senior Ryan Bruggeman became the sixth SMSU player and the first since 1990-91 to lead the conference in scoring after averaging 27 per game in 22 league games this season.
•The 27 ppg is the highest scoring average in the NSIC since MSU Moorhead's Greg Duke also averaged 27 ppg in 1996-97.  
•The previous Mustangs to lead the conference in scoring include Terence Williams (1990-91; 21.5 ppg), Charlie Taylor (1982-83; 24.7), Dexter Cooley (1977-78; 23.6) and Sam Leggett twice (1975-76, 28.7) and (1974-75, 24.7).

    SCOUTING NORTHERN STATE
•The Wolves have won five straight and 10 of their last 11 since Feb. 1.
•Senior guard Ian Smith leads the team averaging 13.6 ppg, has a team-high 158 assists and is the team's leading rebounder with 5.9 per game.
•Junior guard Gabe King has a team-high 52 3-pointers and is averaging 11.5 ppg.
•Senior forward Justin Decker is averaging 11.3 ppg.
•NSU is shooting 50 percent from the field, 41 percent from 3-point range, 75 percent from the free throw line and is plus-5.7 in rebound margin.
•NSU is scoring 79 points per game, while opponents are averaging 70 per game.
•Head coach Paul Sather is in his ninth season with a record of 187-88. He compiled a record of 94-62 in five seasons as head coach at Black Hills State (2005-10).  

    BRUGGEMAN BREAKS SMSU SCORING RECORDS AND
    SECOND ALL-TIME IN NSIC
•Senior Ryan Bruggeman became SMSU's all-time leader scorer during the Mustangs' win at Minnesota Duluth on Dec. 15, 2018.
•He has scored 2,179 career points in 126 games and broke the record previously held by Jacob Fahl (1999-2003), who scored 1,638 points in 120 games.
•Bruggeman also ranks second in NSIC history (conference games only) with 1,523 points in 88 games.
•Bruggeman also set the school single-season scoring on Feb. 23 at Augustana. He has scored 784 points in 30 games, surpassing the previous mark of 700 set by Sam Leggett in 27 games during the 1975-76 season.

    BRUGGEMAN AMONG THE BEST ACTIVE D2 PLAYERS
•Senior guard Ryan Bruggeman ranks among the top six for active Division II players in several career categories.
•As of Feb. 27, Bruggeman ranks third among all active players in free throws made (542), fourth in assists (673), fifth in points (2,141), fifth in steals (221) and sixth in field goals made (740).

    BRUGGEMAN EARNS NSIC WEEKLY AWARD FIVE TIMES
•Senior guard Ryan Bruggeman has been named the NSIC South Division Player of the Week five times this season (Dec. 11, Jan. 3, Jan. 21, Feb. 4, Feb. 18) and has earned the award seven times in his career.

    BRUGGEMAN NAMED TO Francis Top 50 watch list
•SMSU senior guard Ryan Bruggeman was named to the Clarence "Bevo" Francis Award Top 50 Watch List by Small College Basketball on Feb. 15.
•The award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within Small College Basketball.
•The list will be narrowed down to 25 players in a Watch List published on March 15. The finalists will be announced in a highlight video that will be released on April 6, with the winner announced on April 8.

    BRUGGEMAN SETS SCHOOL SINGLE-GAME RECORDS
•Senior Ryan Bruggeman set a pair of school single-game records in SMSU's 100-78 victory over Minnesota Crookston on Feb. 1.
•He finished the game with a record 49 points, breaking the previous record of 48 set by Terence Williams on Nov. 23, 1990, at Mayville State.
•Bruggeman also set a program single-game record with 20 field goals made on 27 attempts. The previous record was 19 set by Williams versus Mayville State in 1990, along with Charlie Taylor versus MSU Moorhead on Jan. 26, 1983.  
•On March 4, Bruggeman set two more school single-game records with 17 free throws made on 19 attempts.

    SCHAFER REACHES 1,000 POINTS & MORE
•Senior Taylor Schafer became the 24th player in team history to reach the 1,000 career points earlier this season on Nov. 20 versus Northland College. He currently ranks 11th on the career list with 1,332 points and also ranks 10th all-time with 497 field goals made.

    2018-19 NCAA STATISTICS
•The latest NCAA statistics (through March 3) are located on page 16.
•The Mustangs rank third in free throw pct., fifth in turnovers per game and sixth in 3-point field goal pct.
Ryan Bruggeman ranks third in field goals made, seventh in scoring, 10th in free throws made, 12th in total steals, 17th in free throw pct., 21st in total assists and 31st in assists per game.

    2018-19 NSIC STATISTICS
•The final NSIC statistics (NSIC games only) are located on pages 14-15.
•Senior Ryan Bruggeman ranked first in the NSIC in scoring (27.0), first in steals (2.2), second in field goals made (217), fourth in free throw pct. (92.0) and fourth in assists (5.1).
•Senior Michael Lee ranked 11th in 3-point field goals per game (2.2), while senior Taylor Schafer ranked 13th (2.1).

•A total of five SMSU players have scored 20 or more points in a game during their careers, including 29 times this season.

    SMSU SETS RECORDS VERSUS FORT HAYS STATE
•SMSU set a program single-game record shooting 73.1 percent from 3-point range (19 of 26) in the win over Fort Hays State on Nov. 10.
•The 19 made 3-pointers tied the single-game record which was set at Minnesota-Morris on Feb. 2, 2002.
•The 19 made 3-pointers also set an R/A Facility single-game record breaking the previous mark of 16 set four times.
 
    KOLIN BARTLETT NOTES
•Has played in 29 games with six starts and is averaging 1.8 ppg and 2.1 rpg.
•Made three field goals in a game three times this season.

•SMSU finished the regular season 12-5 at home this season after finishing 12-2 last season.

    NSIC SOUTH VS. NSIC NORTH
•SMSU finished with a 5-3 record versus the NSIC North Division this season and are a combined 37-19 versus North teams in conference play since divisions were introduced prior to the start of the 2012-13 season.
•SMSU finished 7-1 in 2017-18; 6-2 in 2016-17; 3-5 in 2015-16; 5-3 in 2014-15; 5-3 in 2013-14; and 6-2 in 2012-13.
•The NSIC South holds a 260-188 advantage over NSIC North teams in conference play since divisions were formed in 2012-13, but this season the North finished 38-26. It's the first time in seven seasons the North finished with a winning record.
•Prior to this season, the South Division held the advantage in every season. In 2017-18, (38-26); in 2016-17 (35-29); in 2015-16 (37-27); in 2014-15 (35-29); in 2013-14 (42-22), while in 2012-13 (47-17).

    BRUGGEMAN EARNS PRESEASON HONOR; SMSU PICKED         SIXTH IN NSIC PRESEASON POLL
•Senior guard Ryan Bruggeman was named the NSIC South Division Preseason Player of the Year for the second straight season.
•SMSU was picked to finish sixth overall and fourth in the South Division in the 16-team NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
•Minnesota State and St. Cloud State was chosen as the overall co-favorites.

    WINS VERSUS NATIONALLY RANKED TEAMS
•SMSU has yet to face a nationally-ranked team in 2018-19.
•SMSU defeated No. 7 (D2SIDA)/No. 12 (NABC) Northern State 64-57 on Jan. 27, 2018, in Aberdeen, S.D., recording its lone win over a ranked team last season.
•Prior to the victory last season over NSU, SMSU's last victory over a Top 10 team was on March 3, 2010, at No. 8 (NABC) Minnesota State in the quarterfinals of the NSIC Tournament.

    HOME SWEET HOME
•The 2018-19 season marks the 23rd year the R/A Facility has served as the home arena for SMSU men's basketball.
•SMSU has a record of 229-86 (.727) in 315 games with just two losing seasons.

    CONSECUTIVE 3-POINT GAMES
•Southwest Minnesota State has connected on at least one 3-point field goal in 620 straight games.
•The last time SMSU failed to score a 3-pointer was on Dec. 11, 1998, versus MSU Moorhead (0 for 10) at the North Dakota State Classic.

    MUSTANGS REACH 100 AND THEN SOME
•SMSU has scored 100 or more points three times this season, defeating Bethany Lutheran, 101-81, Crown College, 100-81 and Minnesota Crookston, 100-78.
•It's the first time SMSU has scored 100 or more three times in a season since the 2000-01 season.
•The last time SMSU reached 100 points four times in a season came during the 1996-97 season, when SMSU reached the century mark five times.
•SMSU is now 40-8 all-time when scoring 100 points.

    WORKING OVERTIME
•SMSU is 46-39 all-time in overtime games, including 1-0 this season following an 84-78 win over Wayne State on March 4.
•SMSU is 7-6 in double overtime games and 0-2 in triple overtime games all-time.

    BACK-TO-BACK 20-WIN SEASONS
•SMSU's 25 victories last season ranks as the fourth highest in team history.
•SMSU has recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons for just the second time in program history and has a total of six 20-win seasons in team history.
•SMSU combined to win 53 games the last two seasons (2016-18) which is the best two-year combined wins total in team history.

    SMSU IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
•SMSU made its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance (2001, 2009, 2012, 2017, 2018) last season since moving to Division II in 1995-96.
•SMSU is 9-5 all-time in NCAA Tournament games appearing in three region championship games with two region championships in 2001 and 2009.  

    NSIC SOUTH CHAMPIONS IN 2016-17 AND 2017-18
•SMSU captured the program's second straight NSIC South Division title last season. The NSIC divisional format was created prior to the 2012-13 season.
•SMSU won overall NSIC championships in both 2001 and 2009.

    SMSU RANKED IN THREE PRESEASON POLLS
•SMSU opened the 2018-19 regular season ranked in three preseason polls.
•SMSU was ranked No. 20 by the NABC, No. 14 by D2Bulletin and No. 22 by D2SIDA.

•The 2018-19 campaign marks the 50th season SMSU has competed in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
•SMSU has an all-time record of 371-397 in 768 conference games, finishing in the top half of the final standings 25 times in 50 seasons.
•SMSU has finished in the top half of the NSIC standings in 17 of the last 23 seasons since 1997-98.

    MUSTANG HISTORY
•Southwest Minnesota State is competing in its 52nd season of men's basketball in 2018-19.
•SMSU has played 1,446 games compiling an all-time record of 671-775.
